ground hogs

O/T HELP!!!! MOM HAS THESE GROUND HOGS EVERYWHERE , SHE SAYS THEY ARE BIG AS DOGS ??? HERE IN NC THEIR ARE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO GET RID OF THEN BUT SHE LIVES IN SOUTH JERSEY WITH SANDY SOIL .I THINK SHE HAS TRIED THE TRAPS. THEY GOT TO GO SHE IS STARTING TO NAME THEM LOL P.S. THEY CALL HER THE PLANT LADY,

best traps i found for ground hogs are the bridger body traps. the 160 or 220 will work for you. set em, lay them over the hole and spike them down. hog puts his head thru the hole, instant kill. be sure to chain the trap down so critters dont carry off the carcass. here is a link to murrays lures, they sell the bridger traps.

Ground hogs like apples. One of them stuck onto the trip of a 220 Conabear will add interest.
Careful with those dual spring Conabears. Catch yourself in one and it will take a 2nd person to release the trap. Rare is the person who can open those single handed.
Some people don't like the thought of eating ground hog but they are the very clean animal. And they only eat the finest of feed. The same people however will sit right down to a feed of bacon and ham. What does a pig push around with it's nose all day?

Toss a lit road flare in the hole and shovel the dirt in to seal in the smoke. Or get some fly bait and mix it with grape or orange soda or canned fruit. She'll find Mr. Groundhog about a foot from the fruit. Of course it will also kill her, the neighbor's kids and cats, and anything else that eats it so tell her to be careful.

Conibare 220 over the hole, works great , just stake it down good, 110 will also work but is a little light, sometimes wont kill em. Just make sure there are no dogs around, works on them also.

Let"s hope not. For those that don"t know, they are nasty little rascals, appropriately named because the sting burns like fire.

I found something on the internet called "Giant Killer". Basiclly it is a small road flare that you light put in an active hole and shovel dirt in to seal the hole, being careful not to put it out. They do work and they weren't that expensive.

Just remember , ground hogs always have a second hole. So be carefull of what you put down the hole and location of second hole.

I saw a man on Youtube using a propane "cannon".
Raised the ground up when it went off. Appears to work fine. Filled the hole with gas using a long rod and set it off. Sucks all the air out, let alone the concussion.

Conabear 220 over each hole, they always have two or three. Keep your pets away. Gander Mtn has them and showed me how to use them and also give me some good tips.

They are pretty thick round here too. They are easy to spot, they drive around in new ford one tons with Aluminum beds and smoke stacks, but there ain't a season on them...

Oh you were talking about the other ground hogs. :) If she lives in town I would try call'n animal control first off. They get paid to take care of such. If that is not an option (and she is in town) the conabear over the hole is the best option. Might want to put a wash tub over it to keep neighbors cats out of it. Ground hogs would get a kick out of seeing a bunch of PETA goons have'n a protest in the street!!!

Good luck.

Dave

Ive had some luck with smoke bombs - the ones about the an inch in diameter, sold around the 4th of JUly. Couple of those down a hole where you know the critter is now in residence. Seal off hole with a piece of cardboard and a few shovels of dirt. That smoke is nasty. Will knock 'em down pretty quick. Watch out for, and cover a second hole. Often they will have temprary hide-out holes with only one entrance. 'Round here they are known as WOODCHUCKS!

Make a mixture of about half and half of chlorine bleach and liquid ammonia cleaner and pour in the holes. Best done in the heat of the day or very early morning. Be careful when mixing as it produces poisonous ammonium clorride gas. Don't mix it until you are ready to pour it in the hole... Gene

THANKS ALL. I TO WOULD LOVE TO SIT ON POURCH AND PICK THEM OFF . NO SUCH LUCK IN NJ.DROPING SOMETHING IN THE HOLE SOUNDS BEST , WE ALL KNOW THAT SMOKING KILLS. IF SHE WERE TO THROW IN A FLARE AND FILL BOTH HOLES WITH A CAN OF THAT FOME STUFF WOULD THEY EAT THEIR WAY OUT?

NO ANTS YET ,DON'T KNOW IF THEY ARE A PROBLEM UP NORTH. LEFT IN 73 FOR THE ARMY ONLY BEEN BACK FOR SHORT VISITS SINCE THEN. THEY HAVE BEEN BAD HERE IN WESTERN NC THE LAST FEW YEARS

You got remember these ground hogs live in NJ. They have more rights than all of us combined. In NJ its against the law to even own most traps, no less use one.
Just think, this is the state that had the runny egg law. Couldn"t serve eggs unless they were cooked hard.

If you can still find it, just pour some lewis lye (sodium hydroxide) in the holes. They will move out & not come back. Good for skunks too.

Don't know about location, but we used to pour a quart of gasoline down the hole, then pour five gallons of water down after it. Gas travels on the water. Throw a corn cob lit down hole. Ground hogs come out aflame. works guaranteed. Bernie Steffen

THIS IS FUNNY , THE GUY NEXT DOOR TO MOM WAS PAYING SOMEOME $50 EACH TO CATCH AND REMOVE HOGS,MOM SAYS SHE COULD SEE HIM TAKE THE CAGES AROUND THE CORNER AND TURN THEM LOOSE.THEN HE WOULD CATCH THEM AGAIN.

They are terribly destructive. They eat all our garden vegetables, chew up buried water lines, chew holes in the floors of outbuildings.

You're frickin' nuts. If you had a hog dig a hole underneath your $15,000 Morton building and cause it to be lopsided, you'd be killing those things.

I got this tip off of this forum awhile back; unwrap Double Bubble bubble gum and scatter around their holes. No more ground hogs. It really worked for me and my brother plus a neighbor.

There's nothing wrong with preventing property damage.
That being said, many people kill for their pleasure.
Over the years I came to realize how wrong and stupid that really is.

I had a hereford cow come in with her front leg broken in 2 places when she stepped in a ground hog hole.Ask any one who has stepped into a chucks back door hole while handling hay if they love these gentle creatures.I am going out and look for the little buggers tomorrow morning with my rifle. They will snap their teeth at you if cornered.

A 22 lr with a 4 power scope is plenty of gun for chucks at 100 yards.Nice and quiet.Once in a while a 303 British with a 125 grain bullet works good on longer shots.
