im lookin to buy a good use five foot bush hogg dont care what brand but what is the price range for one oh and how big of trees will one cut i have a 1975 ford 4000 3 cylinder deisel

Depends on where you are. In my neck of the woods anywhere from $150.00 to $1000.00. Anywhere from 2-3 inches

ford 4000, you might want to look into a 6' bushhog, if your planning on running over a 2-3in tree you might have to place something to keep from damaging the tractor down below the radiator, i try to place the stem of small sapling right inside my front tire thereby the axle takes the beating, don't go cheap if your planning on rough stuff

There are all different types of brushhogs out there. The better the construction, the more expensive they are. The light duty ones are meant for pretty much grass only and you'd better not strike anything hard with it. The medium duty ones are much tougher and capable of good sized brush. If the first two options are not enough, then there is the heavy duty. All brands pretty much have those three different grades, and they each have different capabilities.

I agree, there are different grades of them, not sure if you are going new or what, check out servis-rhino. Nice heavy duty one, if you have heavy brush cutting, you may want to stay narrow, or take half a width when cutting, that tractor should handle 6'-8' no problem, narrower for heavy brush, wider for weeds & grass. Thing is with used ones, you need to check em over thoroughly, a lot of these are just hammered, I try like heck to take good care of mine, but things happen, check to see if the seals are leaking on gear box, could dip a magnet in the case to see if there is any heavy metal particulate I suppose, also slop in the works, see if a bearing is going south etc. check for cracks and poorly done repairs/welds etc. Blades can be bent and it can be out of balance, really have to flop er over and see. Preferably you want one with a heavy duty gear box, deck etc. but really check em over, better to go new if all you can find is hammered.

I got my JD model 250 for $25. The guy I got it from figured it was worn out. The slip clutch was SHOT on it, so I tore it all off and use a shear pin now. Cost me another $18 to fix it.
It's a 5' mower. I run it behind an 8N and zip 3" Cedar trees with it - 2" Hedge or Locust. Blades are a little dull, and I use gun grease in the gearbox. Works just great. Behind your 4000, I'd go at least 6'. If you are clearing land for the first time, get one that is beat up. You might have to fight it for awhile, but in the long run, you'll be glad you tore up a cheap, "worn out" mower, instead of a new one....

A 24 hp Ford N will run a 5' rotary mower/bush hog handily. Your 52 hp 4000 will run a 6 or 7 foot mower. Don't undersize your tools. You will regret it.
