Small engine repair prices per hour question

What do shops charge in your area per hour? I am refering more to very small stuff like weedwackers, chainsaw, push mowers. We have seen everything from $25-80 thats a wide spread.
Also do any charge a flat fee upfront so they do not get stuck with the object if its beyond repair?

Local guy here in S Michigan charges at least $25 per hour. I haven't ever taken anything to him that wasn't at least $50.

The trouble with this stuff is a BRAND NEW one is $100 so how much time should one waste on them ? parts are outragous for everything too !

Pretty much throw aways.

The two shops I go to charge by the job - not by the hour. I don't pay people by the hour unless I'm working along side them.

THAT,S A GOOD QUESTION. AS A DEALER WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO PAY FOR SHOP REPAIR ON THINGS LIKE THE E WEEDEATER /CHAINSAWS ECT. RIGHT QUICK YOU CAN EAT UP THE COST OF THE ITEM BUT YOU WONT, BELIEVE HOW SIMPLE SOME REPAIRS ARE , LIKE SPARKPLUG WITE OFF OR CHOKE STUCK BUT IT STILL TAKES 15 MINUTES OF A MAN,S TIME TO FIND THIS.
AS A CUSTOMER WHAT DO YOU THINK A FAIR PRICE IS FOR LABOR ON SMALL ITEMS LIKE THIS. JUST WONDERING. WE ARE AT $ 45.00 PER HR NO FLAT RATE REAL TIME WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PUT IN THE JERK CORD OR WHATEVER AND HAVEN,T HAD MANY COMPLAINTS.

One of my local shops that I buy parts from charges $55 per hour plus parts of course. I haven't check at any of the others but most of the time the place I did check is lower then the others

The price on everything is outrageous these days . When i first started working in a car dealship twisten wrenches customer pay rate was 7.50 and hour , the working man was making between 2.50 -4.50 and hour . On flat rate we got half of the shop rate warranty work was a buck less . then in 1970 it went up to 12.50 . I left the service dept. in the spring of 1970 to become a parts manager and a HUGE pay increase of a whoppen 26000 a year . In 71 the shop rate went up again to 14.50 and warranty work was 13.50 . Now as for parts prices oh lets not go there . We had a really slow week at the dealership and everybody was just setting with not much to do I was bored and just for kicks i sat down and looked up every piece that went into my new 71 Duster piece by piece and priced it out at dealer cost . Now keep in mind that the window sticker listed out for a shade over 3500 and when i hit the total key on the adding machine the price of parts across the contour was well north of 42000 buck , yep 42000 bucks , Give me a break here talk about making a profit. Checked it three time over and yep that was the price for the parts across the contour to hand build a 1971 Duster 340 wright down to the last nut and bolt.

for weed eaters and chain saws I charge a flat $25 plus parts. Unless the cylinder is trash or something then I charge $15 for evaluation and give it back to them as uneconomical to repair.

only small engine repair near me is about 16 miles one way and it's a john deere dealer. they are proud to charge $75/hr and $2/mile both ways. anything they do is at least 1 hour and most LM repair is more.

I had a repair service for several years. I was certified warranty repair for several Manufactures. Husqvarna paid $45 an hour they required you to post that amount or more. Dealer had to send them a picture of their sighn. I charged $45 an hour but rarely ever charged the customer for the full amount of time that I spent.I sure didn't get rich but could sleep at night.

as stated, some manufactures ( if you hang a sign up and do warranty work) make you hang a sign up charging so much an hour.

I would think it best to charge by the job. Dont know what shop rates are anymore. I know that the shops I dealt with were raising prices on labor and material. This was 8-9 years ago before I retired.

Local JD dealer charges 75 bucks an hour, but in reality it's probably twice that.A mower had a blown fuse that took 2 minutes to fix. They charged the guy 75 bucks plus 22 dollar shop charge.Of course they didn't tell him it was only a fuse.

Havent done small engine work latly but I do know that if you charge too much you wont get any work.I do fence charger repair for 20.00 an hour and would get zero work at 40.00.20.00 per hour is a high wage around here High wages and shop rates are the reason we have lost work to china.I figure a 10.00 bill in my pocket is worth more than a 20.00 bill I dont have.I started work at 85 cents per hour in a union shop.

The shops around here usually charge a flat fee for a particular job. Like chain sharpening for 5.00. General repair rates are pretty consistant 40-50 an hour.

Well yes and no. Depends on who you are.

Insurance companies do it all the time on auto body repairs. They tell you how much per hour they will pay and all of the companies stick together. But if you talk to another body shop about it and compare rates then you can get in BIG trouble. Hard to get good techs when they only let you bill around $45.00 for body and yet they pay $65.00 or more ? for mechanical.
