study on cattle grazing north/south

I remember hearing this back in the winter from the late Paul Harvey. I thought BS to myself that very day as I was watching cattle grazing facing West that day. The study says that they tend to face the same way....well yeah cattle generally move forward as they graze and they tend to follow leaders in the herd. Anyone else remember hearing this and doubting it??

Yeah,

I watched a 50-head herd of mule deer this morning facing due west. Maybe they didn't get the memo? :>)

Probably the same ones that reported this; 4-5 months ago the Chicago "Daley machine" was trying to get rid of a carrige ride company. Now these horses are well taken care of and most of the drivers are young gals that LOVE horses. They were kicking them out of the city because of NEGLECT! The horses they showed looked well fed and healthy to me. The news gal on WMAQ made a big deal of the pile of horse poop in the stall that was WITHIN TWO FEET of the horses food (hay) Man, am I glad they didn't come out to my place.
I've got 5 animals here and the two "bosses" quarter horses, crap all over their hay every day!!

In the winter they will stand broadside to the sun to warm up, maybe the sun was shining at noon on a cold winter day when they did the study. ;>)

Several years ago, some university did a study on cattle grazing. One point that they concluded was that if the cattle were facing north when grazing, they crapped to the south. Duh. Sure glad they explained that to me.

(quoted from post at 14:57:23 04/20/09) And why is it important to know that?? Guess who is paying for it.

Cmon now.... That's important!!!! That's what will determinthe amount of cow fart tax you pay based on how your property is situated in relation to populated areas.

Don't be so negative..........

Well no wonder it takes so much feed to produce a pound of beef. Here it is that we have hundreds of feed yards with their troughs oriented north and south meaning the animals have to face east and west. Granted they are not grazing, but I'll bet their systems are really screwed up because of this.

Wonder if I can get a multi-million dollar grant to study this in greater detail? Might have to dip into the tens of million of dollars to build new feed lots and stock them for a real comparison test.

Yes, we definitely need to know this. The last deer I saw were grazing on an E/W axis, but they were moving to the west as well.

Probably not for that , I was thinking a study of the quality of beef that feed off round feeders though. and their directional preferences.

After work we went out for happy hour. I could not help but notice that everyone at the Bar faced the same direction when they drank beer. I wonder what causes this strange behavior.

Something called "Television", maybe. I'm not familiar with the phenomenom. I haven't been in a bar since television came along.

I posted about this here back when that study came out. Here is what bothers me about it:

The study is based on satellite photos.

Now, there are a few things that all satellite photos have in common:

1. They are taken when the sun is at its highest point in the sky.

2. They are taken when there are no clouds in the sky.

As long as you're not very close to the Equator, you are going to face North (or South if you're in the Southern Hemisphere) under these conditions because that's the direction that best keeps the sun out of your eyes.

Not saying that the magnetism hypothesis is false, but I wouldn't put too much stock into it unless they do another study that controls for sunlight.

Bill, I have been enlightened, it was not the TV, it was the Basketball game on the TV that caused this curious behaviour. Basketball causes cows, mule deer and people that go to happy hour to face the same direction. That is all clear now.
