'99 Olds....

On another thread, I mentioned acquiring a '99 Olds 88. Here's the rest of the story.

It's an exceptionally clean car with 85,000 miles, but I bought it with some rear end damage. I had a spec shop put it on a frame rack, square up the rear end and fit new parts, then I took it from there, finished the body and paint work and put it back together.

If this has the 3.1 or 3.4, you might need the intake gaskets replaced. Not too expensive, but if left unfixed, it will ruin your engine. Check your coolant freqently.
My next advice is to get the Dex-Cool out of the radiator, flush it several times with water and then replace with G-05, the Ford spec coolant.

The plastic plenum is the only thing to watch with the later 3800s. They seem to be the weakspot other wise I have a 94 and a 97 with 220,000 miles and they run perfect. I bought a 97 Rivera with the supercharged 3800 last fall with 160,000 and it also seems a strong engine. The supercharger is the plenum so it will be interesting to see how many miles it will go.

I'm onto those plastic plenums. I think I'll save myself some future grief and replace it now. They're only like $130 for the kit and maybe 1.6 labor.

The '92 Olds 88 I'm replacing, also 3.8, has 238,000 miles on it, runs same as ever, and still doesn't use oil. As far as I'm concerned, GM's 3.8 is second only to the small block Chevy V8 on GM's list of alltime best engines. I once got rid of a Pontiac mini-van I really liked otherwise because I got tired of trying to keep ahead of coolant leaks on that no-account 3.4 engine.

Had two '88 Buick Park Avenues- loved them both, sold each at about 250K, engines still fine, but too much other stuff going wrong (paint, heating/cooling problems, and a failing transmission on one)

Do yourself a favor and replace the lower intake to head gaskets too. The Dex-Cool loves to eat at the coolant passage areas on the gaskets. Already lost 2 engines to this problem. I just installed the 3rd one in my "95 Buick Park Ave. and I did the intake gaskets right away. The gaskets weren"t too bad in the new engine (it is an engine out of a 2005 Impala), but to be on the safe side, I replaced them.
