JD 148 Loader

How much does a John Deere 148 Loader weigh? My dad just bought a 148 loader and needs to haul it home (1200 miles).

Can we haul it in the back of a 1/2 ton pickup or should we use our flatbed trailer?

To get it in the bed of a pickup, a 7' bucket will have to be taken off and will lay lengthwise and the end on the tail gate, I'd think, with the front loader cross arm laying in front of it and stradling the loader. One brace may have to lay on top of the bucket. On a trailer you can leave it together and let it sit till ready to mount it. Without measuring one, I'd suspect it is going to lay across the wheel wells for sure.

I'd think you want to get some pictures and measurements before you go. I'd like to hear more details from the earlier poster who did haul one on how he got it all loaded.

Of course the extra gas and pulling a trailer is a pain for a long drive. I'm a one hand driver who tends to weave over the road with the wind and only correct every so often. My trailer is 8 1/2' wide (the max) and a lot wider than the pickup. It is a real pain pulling it down some of these 2 lane black tops and even bad on the interstate particularly going through big cities in multiple lanes. Constant 2 hands on the wheel and constant checking the mirrors since I only have a couple feet lane clearance on each side and then have a lane filling semi on each side of me going down the interstate making all those curves they have in the big cities at 70 mph. No fun and no relaxation.

No problem, take the bucket off and slide it under the frame, then put the mounting irons in beside the frame, and close the tailgate. I hauled one in a short bed but couldn"t close the tailgate so I tied it in the bed.

If you don"t like the drive there are guys that will haul it for you probably cheaper than you can go yourself. Look on the hauling board or post it there.

That was about 1977- had an 8 foot box pickup then. Pretty much like you said- bucket off, lengthwise, frame over the bucket and tailgate, I think. Dealer had a loader handy for the heavy work....brackets etc. went in last. Pretty sure the manual lists the shipping weight, but it was no problem for a 72 Ford half ton.
