O/T got a small problem

Today when I was walking in the yard I found a sink hole. It is about 25-30 feet from the house. So far it is about 2 foot in diameter and about 10 foot deep at the deepest area. I don't think the house has a problem since there is a lot of bed rock close to the house. Years ago when the well was drilled they went down 15 feet and hit the spring/cave and I figure the sink hole is probably part of that. But any how not a nice thing to have that close to the house. But maybe it will open up to the spring so I can use it to water the garden which is also very close to it

I would say make sure the home owners insurance is updated and covers your home falling into a sink hole.

You may want to get some gravel (limestone) and fill it in to solidify it somewhat.

I assume you have it covered, you don't want animals or children to fall in.

Maybe you'll discover the next Mammoth Cave down there.

Thats a good thing!Start digging for old bottles. Some are worth 50 cents some are worth $5000.Never know what you find.It could be a well or could be an outhouse.

Was there ever any mining done around there? If the answer is no, then it"s probably the site of that old well. If the answer is yes, then we need to know more. I"ve seen holes 400" deep open up on the sites of old mines thar were "closed" by simply putting a dirt plug in the top. After many years and many rains, the planks below the plug rotted and the plug became soft and down she went.

What insurance?? Last time I tried to get some they wanted 2 times the price of my house payments for it so I don't have any. Wish I did but can not afford paying $200 plus a month for it

Amen on the insurance issue. I can't get any either, 1987 14x70 mobile home. It is over 15 years old, after 15 years they won't write them. DOUG

Has anyone explored your caves? We don't have any around here (no limestone), and caves have always fascinated me. Maybe a guy ought to get a ladder, and crawl down that new sinkhole. . . But be sure your life insurance is paid up!

On another subject- I visited relatives in Lebanon, MO when I was a kid, and I remember going to a HUGE spring- thing must have been 100 feet in diameter, and enough water coming up that a river flowed out of it. I think it was in a public park of some kind, because there were lots of people around. Any idea where/ what that was?

Better call the army. It's the chinese digging up from the other side. Once they get into your caves, ya can't get rid of them. Eat you out of house and home.

Most of those caves run water depending upon upon the time of the year and how wet it is. Put an old fashion well house with rope and bucket. Maybe clean it out till you hit water. I suspect it is a hole in the limestone rock but if it is laying along some type of seam/fault in the rock, you'd want to know. I'd dig around the edges to make sure it is a hole in solid rock and not something that will creep to your house. Drainage from the house going that way may open it up more. Good luck with it. Some of those caves and underground rivers in the ozarks can be interlinked for over 30 miles or more. My sister lives at the head of the Spring River. Artesian wells all over the place. Some that only flow at certain times.

Old, be careful around that thing; you don't want the ground collapsing under your feet while you're out there by yourself.

I understand the cave systems in the area. Back before I had my back hurt I us to belong to a caving club and spent lots of hours under ground. I at one time spent 2 nights in a cave. When we went in it was short sleeve weather and when we came out there was 2 inches of snow on the ground. That was in Carrol cave in Camden county

That was probably Beentt springs which is just a few mile was of Lebanon. Big trout fishing area down close to Lebanon and is also a state park. Or it could have been up Here close to Camdenton at Hahotaka state park which also has a million gal. a minute spring

Hi Old. The Corps of Engineers should have extensive maps of all the caves in the area. They mapped them all out about 30-40 years ago when they wanted to build that dam that never happened because they couldn't plug all the caves in the area. They tried to though from what I heard. I guess they dumped over a million yards of concrete in one cave and didn't even come close to filling it. It must have been the largest cavern in the US. Hope it doesn't spread on you! ...Randy

I have been watching one start up in western Owen county Indiana. There isn't supposed to be any caves in that area. Not sure why it started but it has swallowed a small beech tree and is bigger that it was last year.It has been growing about 2-3 feet deeper and wider every year. Keep a close eye on yours especially after rains. You might have to have pilings driven inbetween the hole and your house to hold the sinkhole at bay.

Can't remember the names, but I lived on a place near Newburg on Mill Creek that started a mile or so from the house from these springs. I'd never seen anything like it and haven't since.

When I was a kid in SE OH, a guy dropped his tractor into one. In that case, there was a drain that ran to the river that had a hole in it and the dirt fell through over ?years until the top got thin enough that it wouldn't hold the weight.
