Fellow in high school (late '50s/early '60s) was Dunghead (literally); better to have any knickname than to not have one at all (I was Country).

All the mexicans (i.e. "deep" south labor) at work call me chivo because I have a long goatee. It means sheep in english. Everybody else calls me amishman.

Mom brought me home from the hospital at 3 days old and our neighbor saw me and said "I looked like a pete. I"m 62 now and been a pete all my life. Went to school with a skinny boy called "peahead" and a goofy boy called "hog jaw". Guess all in all "pete" is pretty good.

My great-grandfather was Alva Centennial Warner (born in 1876, thus the middle name). He never got a nickname and hated the name Alva. The only unkind word he ever spoke about his parents had to do with his name.

So one of his daughters, my grandmother, names her second son (my uncle) Alva. Well, Poppy wasn't havin' anything to do with that, refused to ever call a child by that name, and allowed that his grandson looked like a Jake. And Jake he became. Everybody in town knew Jake, but not until he died did they ever know that his name was Alva. A few of them might have heard it when his name was called at their high school graduation, but had forgotten.

Worked with a guy called Dog. Don't know why, but that's what he answered to, even his wife called him Dog.

When I was going to a one-room school in the 50's, most of the boys had nicknames after their father's tractors. So we had Fordson, W-4, Farmall, Putt-Putt (JD), 8-N, W-6 and of course my father was the proud owner of a Cockshutt 30. Yeah, that's right, I got Cock until I got to High School where other nicknames were more COOL.

No but I once worked with a guy that his real name was Peter Haire. Had a little sis named Cathryn....of course they called her Cat for short.

Question....would murdering your own parents be acceptable in this situation???

The uncle of my best friend, (Friend that died last week) always called me "Barnyard", and would then tell how I must have been kicked in the head by a mule as a kid.. That entire side of the family always calls me Barnyard, even though the Uncle died in 1990.. At the visitation last week, it made me feel good that they all called me Barnyard..

I dated a girl in high school who was named George Ann, and her nickname was Jo Ann. Then a couple of years later I dated a beautiful brunette whose name was Margaret, but her nickname was George. My friend Tater was called that because his last name was Taylor. Had a brother-in-law the family called Stinky...and his sisters were Burf, Gums, and Duck [the one I was married to.] And one of my old friends was known as Wino because he could do the George Carlin comedy bit about fictional DJ "Scott Lame".

But as a rule, I really don't know that many folks who go by nicknames.

I worked at a mill for 8 years - fantastic nicknames in there. There were the sort of ones you might have heard before: bandit, chico, tiny, junior, poncho, snake; but there were also names like press-monkey, zombie, bonehead, and potato head. It was sometimes difficult to have a conversation with someone you called bonehead.

Old riding buddies known mostly by knicknames- keeps cops from getting good traceback. Had a few I was trying to bail out of jail for various reasons and found out given names on forms. Some of the women AKAs showed up on warrants couple times, quick change to something else. the introductions rarely were 'whats your name' but more on lines of what do you call yourself today?' Couple cops at rally site asked for me by name and nobody knew who they were talking about, Cops finally said needed for accident victim ID at coroner so I had to get in touch with next of kin. Chicago people a shafty rallies still call me by club name. RN

Well back almost 3 decades ago when I was in the Navy I went by Monkey. Reason was I could/would climb almost any place with out ropes ladders etc. Even had an Admiral walk out of his state room with me hanging up side down from the over head by my knees. He asked what I was doing and I told him running cables sir. I stopped being called Monkey when people stated to tell woman that was my name

i had a guy come to work for me -- everyone called "chop" when he filled out I-9 form-- he put his name down as "porkchop." i called him on it-- and that was his name-- his mother had named him porkchop because it was her favorite food. i was speechless. he was black-- his wife was mexican-- he called her panocha. that name i wont translate on this board-- but i could never call her by name or nickname- i sometimes thought about hiring her so i could get a legitimate name on her.
