RE :Family tractor pricing 3wks back

Some of You may recall ,the agony of pricing 2 of my Dads(he passed away in August 08) tractors for family members , SO ,. here is update.... B-I-L and Sis ended up with tractor,The Little Jd L that looked like it had been to the moon and back had everyone bidding to the moon .So, nephews yeilded.. (Dad give $75 for the running JD in 1969) The idea of everyone putting up appraisal prices and averageing them got shot down by one of my sisters.. SO , .everthing went to Consignment auction and B-I-L paid highest bid price..Which WAS DEAD CENTER of My HI and LO price that I would had put in the Appraisal Hat ,I had confidentially told one of My Close nephews what my thoughts were the day of auction .(He is tellin 'Everyone, "Jim was Right on the Money ")....Auction Lasted 7 hours there were over 400bidders registered The Tractor sold at halfway point around noon , the weather was good ....Here Is How it went :::In the end, One of My brothers bid the tractor back home .. B-I-L did not bid ,, But was ready to if it was at level He could afford ,ONLY IF ,, my brother Stopped bidding (when price met what Mom expected to get Which was never diclosed ) , All said and done B-I-L and Mom agreed on Exactly on final bid price couple days after auction . NONE of US have a Money Tree ,, Mom Could had asked More , And B-I-L could had paid more , family wisdom prevailed ,No one paid more than General public would pay ( they were taking $50 bids).,Tractor went to Who needed it Most , Any of Us could had Bought it regardless but wanted to yeild to Sis ..And as Far as I know All are REASONABLY Satisfied ..scarcely a grumble in the bunch ,,And That Ain't Bad for our family !LOL ! . I did buy 3 pcs back .Keep in mind Dad Sold alotta stuff to Us over the last 30 yrs As we agreed on price , And Mom Still has the 430 CASE diesel(That is an Heirloom destined to stay in family ) and a few things Yet,, Hope All is well in Your family , Blessings ,Jim

That's the problem with trying to keep something in the family. I tried to keep one of the JD G tractors that was bought new by Dad's family in 49' in the family. I was told I couldn't buy it because 'we want to keep it in the family' ( Dad married Mom in the early 60s after my father died). I was always considered the "redheaded stepchild" by Dad's family. The tractor was put into the farm auction a few years later and it sold for $5,200 which was about $4,000 more than it was worth to a sucker in Virginia. I walked away with a pretty sour feeling. I was told last year that the uncle who wouldn't sell me the G was looking to buy a JD 2 cylinder to restore in his retirement, so I promptly sold the G and the A I had to some out of town friends for what I had invested. "Just wanted to keep them in the family".

Glad your plan worked but it wouldn't have worked so well if someone outside your family with deep pockets had decided they wanted it.I went to an estate sale years ago where the family
had decided who was going to bid (and get) what, well the tractors bought about 3X what they were planning on and none of them were able to keep the tractors in the family,of course the owner got a nice check.

Glad it worked out. I know when the time comes and my parents pass there is likely to be a HUGE mess to deal with my 2 sisters. Dad and I have soo many tools and I have no clue as to who bought what when. So far most all of them are at a central location at the shop on his place.

My uncle had a sale and was selling the JD 70 I spent some time on growing up. I really didn't need another tractor and my other uncle said he was interested in it so I didn't even think about bidding on it. I also thought it may of been bid back in and not let go my by uncle who was having the sale. Well nobody was on the ball and it sold to someone in the crowd. Sometimes I wish I had it , but then again I have way more then I know what to do with now.

So how much did your mom lose to the auction company? No doubt they must have taken a sizeable chunk of the value for offering the tractors to the public like that.

Good consignment auctioneers usually charge 6% to 10% on larger items (the more expensive the item the lower the commission). Their ability to attract 400 bidders means they easily earned their commission.

Glad it worked out. I saw your brother at the auction, but I guess Ryan and I were not there long enough to run into you. Dad told us what the JD L brought, and I guess that explains the price!

Seem's it worked well for all. When my Dad passed ,what a squabble. 12 Heirs, myself was willed Executor, not knowing what I was getting into I accepted the job. Took 10 years to dispose of his Real Estate holdings, lots of his personal property"Dissapeared'. Many hard feelings. I'm not leaving such a situation for my spouse or children, guaranteed.

that is what happened on the little JD L , ...too rich for the nephews blood ,, and I already have a Coffee table ...Fortunately We will see the JD L from Time to Time restored in DO NOT TOUCH mint condition,,The other Tractor was not a NOvelty Tractor , It is a Daily Work Horse and most farmers will keep their bids with in reason ,.few folks other than Dale 's family knew we were going to try to keep them in the family .
