720 John Deere...great way to see the country

Good morning folks,

Well, I got started on the job of hauling my equipment from granddad and grandma"s farm to our new place. First to go was the 720 and my 4 bottom trailing plow. I decided it would be fun just to drive those over and then use the truck to pull the rest of the implements over. I didn"t do any rigging to the hitch so when I got to a place on my road where I could use road gear I discovered that road gear wasn"t going to fly. The plow was whipping back and forth a lot. So, I put it in 5th gear and headed down the road. Took me 3 hours to get there. It was a very long trip. It also got a little chilly by the time I got there. But it was a fun experience and will definitely be a good source for stories for years to come. Hope everyone is having a great day. God bless.

Some of the most interesting trips have been on my 720, road gear is not very fast either and you would be amazed at what you find on the side of the road.

Should be a spot where you can put a pin in the back wheel mechanism to "lock" the trailer wheel whentransporting so it can't whip. Just dont try and turn with the pin in the lock or the wheel skids or pieces break.

I learned a trick on how to pull a trailer plow down the road. Set the moldboards very low, just 2-3" off the road. I can trail my #8 behind my H Farmall wide open in 5th and it behaves nicely. If I set it higher, things get very exciting before I get to 1/2 throttle! And I admit the scenery is much prettier if I just throttle back some and enjoy the ride; the H goes 17 mph full throttle and that's too fast to watch the birds, check fields, wave at people, etc.

We had a neighbor that had a farm about 20 miles away from his home place back in the 60's. He and the wife would hook up several implements and usually get by with one trip. I saw him once with a disk, planter and a wagon. They farmed that way for at least 20 years probably more.

Did some baling for some of my brothers inlaws a few years ago. Took 520 John Deere and baler about 10 or 12 miles over. Just got a good start and the pto clutch went out on the 520. Went by car back and got the 720D plus the tractor toter cart. When I got done that afternoon I had the 720, the baler, the toter with the 520 hooked to the rear of the baler, and a bale rack hooked to the 520. Nice ride on the 720 dragging all else home.

Howdy,

Didn"t know about the locking pin in the tail wheel. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, there is more weld back there than anything else so I"m sure it isn"t an option any more. That"s alright. It was a fun trip anyway. God bless.
