Feeder Pig Prices

Just wondering what feeder pigs are selling for around the country. I live in central IN. Thinking about buying leftovers from the guys who raise 4-H pigs. I did this until last year when grain prices went crazy. I decided to wait it out a year. Not real sure about this year. The pigs are going to have to be priced right or the building can set empty again.

I'd worry more about the .35-.40 butcher price when they are fed out unless you can sell them locally for people to butcher, neighbor is raising some dirt hogs and can sell all he raises.

I sold what was left out of my showpigs, the were about 50 pounds and brought 52 bucks a piece.

A few weeks before though, a set of hogs went through and they only fetched .86 a pound, so who knows. I know of people buying a bunch of pigs and feeding them but i cannot see how they are making much money, unless they have thier own grain.

We raise some hogs. My wife sells eggs, produce, meat in town and at farmers' market. The way we are working it, we sell most of the growing hogs as feeders. We hope to get enough out of them to pay for the whole operation without any profit. The ones we feed out, we either have butchered and sell mostly whole hog sausage, but also some meat by the cut, at above retail prices. The profit comes from those hogs.

Last year was really not so good. We'll just keep an eye on the finances and see if it makes sense. This year might be better.

I do get my feed from a neighbor who raises hogs and grinds his own feed. Very reasonably priced. A lot cheaper than the closest feed dealer. If it wasn't for him there is no way I could even think of doing this.

Wish I could tell you, but I can't find feeder pigs around here anymore. We've always kept at least 1 hog around to eat table scraps, garden surplus, and rough fish. Feeding corn to fill in the gaps. Never had to look further than one of neighbors since almost everyone had at least a few hogs. Times have sure changed now. The guilt I have now I had to get from a guy several miles away and it was from his last sow. I don't know where to go next. The big hog ops won't even sell runts because they don't want their secret breed getting out, also they don't have time to screw around selling a few feeders (if they even own the hogs in their barn in the first place).

Local sale barn sell about 400 to 600 a week in Kidron, Ohio. At about 50# and up they get $1.00 a pound in the spring, come summer maybe 25 cent per pound after the 4Hers get out. Under 50# they only get around 50 cents per pound and during the summer maybe 10 cents per pound.A couple producer buy alot of the larger pens afew hundred a week. I feed out about 50 a year enough to get mine for free and a little play money.
