As those pirates throw their grapples over ship side to crawl onboard, why can't a crewman just cut the rope as he is climbing up? It can't be to heavey of rope or pirate could'nt hurl it up that high. Is there not edge on ship that crew could not crouch behind so as not to get shot? If there is not an edge then what does the grapple catch on? also pirate must have to hurl it up several times before he gets it to catch. So not all would have to be cut at same time. As they are climbing up rope they cannot be shooting so there must be many on pirate boat shooting. Right? I'm not trying to be insensitive to this but I just don't understand.

I wouldn't want to stick my head over the side to see who's coming up when they're carrying guns and those on their little boat are backing them.

Personally I think this should never happen or be allowed to happen. The crew need to be armed, they most likely will be armed on all cruise ships here shortly.

How did pirating get stopped 200 years ago?

I'll be insensitive. They should just have judge and Jury at sea, tie a brick to their legs and throw them over board, or sink their boat with them on it or just shoot the bas tards in the head.

I'd assume there are others in the attackingboat with guns and RPG's ready . I would think, If ships had security force flown in , on board while ship is in danger zone,,it would not take to much to repel these scum, yes they are scum .
Snipers could take them out before they get in RPG range ? If a few of these get sunk and more scum killed, I'm sure it will lessen the attacks . But thats just me thinking outloud and what I'd do if I had billions in ships and crews .

Ever hear the United States Marine Corp hymn ? Sleep thru history class when learning about the Barbary Coast pirates and the shores of Tripoli ? Of course we had presidents who believed in F--- with us and you get whatever we are able to give you. It is time the U.S. follows Israel's lead, Open the door and I'm going in as far as I want, leave the door alone and I'll go peacefully away.

You know the Marine Corp Anthem? The part about "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli"? The Marines going ashore in what is now Libya was what ended pirate attacks on American ships last time.

Someone told me they couldn't use firearms to shoot those sniveling snake pirates...Something about only actual armed forces could carry and use firearms in international waters...I think that's a crock......Since when is pirating legal and protecting yourselves not legal ????? They can use RPG's and AK's against us...I say we should hire vigalantes with 50 caliber gunmounts to protect our ships and crews...All ships of that size have radar to watch for closing watercraft...I'm just sick and tired of us being pushed around by every ballsy pip squeak country that thinks the United States has given up and rolled over to them...Come on , Stand up America..Or we'll be fighting them over here again....Remember 9-11 !!!!!!!!

I was watching a show about cargo ships. They use water cannons to try to keep pirates off but they aren't always effective. Dave

the Navy needs to go in and use what ever weapons they have to clean their port of landing if they have no place to land to refuel and restock they will soon be out of business.

Guys, look: it's just business. As long as there were only a few ships getting picked off, it was cheaper for the shipping companies to pay off, and just add it to their costs...their insurance rates went up a little, but nothing like the costs of arming the ships and/or security people plus the combat insurance costs, the long-term costs of any onboard casualties, etc...
The pirates mistake was picking a ship with US crew (I didn't know there were any US crews left!!)and holding the Capt.,which left O with no choice but to assure they failed, whether they got the Capt. out or not.
Naturally, success induces others to jump in, until they kill the goose that laid the golden eggs.
We might see a few Q ships deployed now...

These are big ships with small crews. Also, imagine leaning over the rail trying to cut a line while someone in a boat is shooting at you from below with an automatic weapon.

In many cases, all the pirates have to do is fire an RPG in the general direction of the bridge, that's usually enough to convince the captain to stop. The shipping companies don't want the ship, cargo and crew to be put at risk, and the pirates have a record of treating hostages well as long as they cooperate.

Like I said the other day on here, If you got a water cannon spray hot oil or boiling water on them.If they don't die at least they will go home red and embarassed

Every square inch a container can fit is stacked.Not really made for personnel to walk around the decks.Most crewmen on the ship are third world country themselves and some ships dont even supply crews with food.Ive seen them catching drinking water from a tarp into a 55 gal. drum.If you saw the ship in port loaded with containers you'd think it would flip right over out at sea.I think the pirates have more firepower and crews have none.[RPGs may come into play]

It's all about a very large ship with a very small crew.
Might have lookouts on the bridge to see where they are going but chances are they don't have enough bodies to man all the look out stations like a navy ship.
Small Zodiac type boats do not show on radar.
Most crews probably don't have a clue until it's too late.

Firehoses work well enough, don't need boiling oil or flame throwers.
You get pegged with 170 psi water coming out of a 1 1/2" or 2 1/2" hose and you will fall off that rope/chain. seen it enough at nuc protests at the sub base in Scotland. All hands man your repel boarders stations!!
