MN driving directions

Hey MN guys,

Question for ya. I need to travel from the St. Cloud area down to Luverne, MN on Monday pulling a 20ft trailer. Looking for advice on what is the best way to get there and back. I'd like to go what ever way is the quickest, as I don't have a lot of time to spend on the road. Prefer double lane highways if possible, as there are no interstates connecting anything going that way.

Thanks for any advice you've got for me. Enjoy the beautiful day today!

Wish I could help ya with that. Never been to Luverne. Good luck getting the prize home. I'll be at that auction in Kimball today seeing if I can get that 986 and a few other things. Make sure you send me some pics and have a safe and breakdown free trip!

Depends where you are in the St. Cloud area. In order to get the most 4 lane, you would want to angle to Mankato and take 60 down to I-90. Then its just short drive west to Luverne. I do that kind of haul daily for a living around here, but would approach it differently from Foley than I would Kimball. People from both towns say they are from the St. Cloud area.

why not take Mn. highway 23 from St. Cloud to Pipestone then US highway 75 from Pipestone to Luverne? that's the most direct route, Mankato is way out of the way. 23&75 are both decent roads

You Bet. I'll be sending you photos soon. Have to wait until I get the new grill for it though. (I knew the old one was missing when I bought it. I ordered one yesterday.) Also going to check into having another set of loader mounts built at a local machine shop, before I mount the loader, so I can swap the loader between the 686 and the 886 easily.

Hey, good luck on the 986. Hope you get a deal on it! The more I learn about these 886's the better I like them. If it gives as good of service as the 686 has, I know I'll be very satisfied.

I'm actually 70 miles NE of St. Cloud, but I know I need to head that general direction, so that's why I picked St. Cloud.

Are there a lot of small towns where you have to slow down to 25-30 mph every 10-15 miles? That's what I'm trying to avoid if possible. I am not at all familiar with SW Minnesota, as I actually live in NE Minnesota. Just figured I'd have to pass through St. Cloud, and thought I might get some advice one the best way from there.

Hey Dave, post what that 986 brings. I'm curious. Last Saturday one sold in Clarksville Ia for $5K. It was field ready, good tires, not beat up, ran great. Owner retired and didn't need it anymore.
The auctioneer had a hell of a time getting past $4K and tried for 10 minutes to get past $5K.

Should have read your post better the 1st time I read it. I'm coming right through Foley. Directions from there would be appreciated. Thanks!

He is right about 23 and 75 both being good roads. Like I said earlier, it just depends where you are starting from. From my place, the miles are exactly even both ways to Sioux Falls, so it boils down to personal preference. Feel free to give me a call. 612-309-8901 Rick

just take 23 to Pipestone and then 78 to Luverne.
You can't get much simpler and direct as that. Some of it is 4 lane, the rest is a wide 2 lane. There are very few small towns that you have to slow down for. Have a map along is case you decide another route.

I'll throw in my .02 as well.

How about 23 to 15 in St. Cloud. Then 15 south to Highway 60 south of New Ulm.

Couple of small towns on 15, but not as bad as some of the other routes.

Watch the roundabout on the north side of Hutchinson - shouldn't have any trouble with that length of trailer.

Also, when you approach New Ulm, take 14 east, then hang a right about 2 miles down 14 (I forget the number) Then you can avoid most of downtown New Ulm. This will come out by the Perkins on the south side of New Ulm. Hang a left (south) on 15, keep going until you hit 60.

60's a pretty good 4-lane for the better part of the drive.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I'm gonna get out my map and do some close looking at the routes you fellows suggested. I sure appreciate all of your information.

I agree with Brian, 23 would be the best way down to Pipestone then 78 to Luverne.Granit Falls, a few stop lights in Marshall, and Pipestone are really the only places you have to stop along 23.
BTW: GOTTA stop at Langs in Pipestone for pie.

Steve Lange- owner of Langes Cafe in Pipestone can kiss my a$$, cattlemen helped build his business then he puts pasture in crep taking it away from the same cattlemen. Go around the Playmor curve in the nw corner of Pipestone and check out his house then decide if he has been doing you a favor with his prices.
