what kind of transmission is in this truck

Could be an AOD/AODE or E4OD.
You can identify it by noting which of these gaskets match the shape of your oilpan.

It should be an AOD. The AODE started in 1992 and the 4R70W started in 1993.

The AOD was a 700 Ft.Lb. box while the E4OD was a 1000 Ft.Lb. box reserved for larger CID engines.

The AOD of that vintage used Mercon oil. (Not Mercon V)

Bob, thanks for taking the time to post your informative pictures. Where do you find those pictures that quick? Do you have a whole library of reference books?

There should be a prduction tag on the driver door that should have a transmission code...that should tell what transmission the truck left the factory with, if you don't want to crawl under the truck and count transmission pan bolts.

Google.

Also, The Wix Master Filters Catalog (or equivalent) is a great resource. They have the gasket/pan diagrams for most auto trannies.

Not ALWAYS.

My B-I-L has a '92 with a regular cab, light duty he bought NEW off the lot. It has a 302/5 liter and an E4OD.

A friend bought an extended cab the same year, also with a 302, and got and AOD in that, HEAVIER pickup.
