Local newsletter---er, newspaper, this AM had piece on "re-announcement" of 2007 recall of log splitters made by Brave Prod Inc, Streator, IL.
Sold by Ace, True Value, Do It Best hardwares, and OTHER INDEPENDENT DEALERS 2002-2007.
Seems it tries to split when it isn't supposed to; also sounds like someone lost a hand.
Details: logsplitters-ironoak.com, braveproducts.com, cpsc.gov

Was it made by the company that is selling it?? Or is it a product of China, India, Malaysia, Lower Slobbovia, or any of those furrin countries, with a label made in the usa!? The label, that is??
I took a ride with a friend today, down to the local Harbor Freight Store! I don't think they had anyting in that store that was made in this country! Well, maybe a candy bar, but i'm not so sure about that either!
Ya have to look carefully at most tools now! They sneak things in any more!
Any way, if it was made "off-shore" better look for a good used one, made in the U.S.A!

Timberwolf log splitters are made in Rutland VT.Not a Chinese or Indian import.
I've had one for 5 years, great machine. I used to split all my wood with a Monster Maul, after 2 yrs that got old and I got old.

Hazard: The log splitter’s hydraulic cylinders can have defective rod retention, causing the seals to leak and the rods to detach. This can result in serious injury to the operator, as the rod can rapidly and unexpectedly extend the splitting wedge.

Incidents/Injuries: Brave Products originally received 59 reports of leaking cylinders and/or rod retention failure. One consumer reported a hand amputation that could have been caused by this cylinder defect. There have been 26 additional reports of failure, including units previously thought to be unaffected by the earlier recalls. No new injuries have been reported.

American log splitters use to say on them "built by Americans for Americans" Speco are also good splitters, but its like anything else stupid people want cheaper things, and there goes American manufacturing. I wont buy ANYTHING from Harbor Frieght. Like the other guy said all made in China, sad there making a living selling Chineese junk, and Some Americans flock to it like its free money.

Early 90's bought my Brave splitter from Harbor Freight, never regretted it (free shipping ).I have over 400 hours on it so far.I try to buy only name brands fron H.F. as most of the other stuff is junk.

I did hear that Brave were good too! I forgot about them, Also Timberwolf is good as with many others, dident mean to offend anyone. However I dident even know HF sold a good brand like that. jlol

I have one of those splitters, but I'm pretty sure it was manufactured before the recall range. I'll have to see if I can find the serial number on it. It has been an excellent splitter and has given no problems to date.
