OT I Got Laid Off Today

I figured this was coming, last week the rumor was floating around work that 45 people would be laid off (terminated) on Friday. I got there at 6:30 and punched in like normal. Wasn't there very long and saw one of the stuporvisors leading a guy out. About 7 my boss came over and said come with me. I knew I was next. Went to personel, they are paying for insurance for 30 days, said they would take care of things at the unemployment office, then in 2 weeks I'll get paid for vacation that I have. Guess I'll have time to do some of the stuff around here that needs done. I lived on unemployment 3 years ago, guess I can do it again. Chris

Every day now since last Nov. I come into work and expect the same thing to happen to me.
So far the doors are still open ( barely ) and the electric still on to the time clock. so I clock in and wait.

Sorry to hear. The job section in the paper has shrunk but I think many now use Craiglist.Hope you find work soon.

Get in line. My wife lost another job 3 weeks ago. Second time in a year and she's a nurse! The nursing schools keep churning them out like a puppy mill, claiming it's an occupation that's starving for applicants. Yea right! Maybe somewhere in the world, but not in rural mid Michigan. They still haven't even processed her unemployment claim. She saw another nurse that she had worked with a week ago. Said she had been told not to come in the entire week before. Not an official layoff, but just not enough residents in the nursing home to need her.

I said last May when she lost her last job that if it happened again,we were selling everything and leaving. We can survive in a cabin in the Ozarks or Appalachians for a long time with the money we could put under the mattress. I don't know what to do. Let's just say we're still here. For now.

My wife got laid off in January. Luckily she found a better job after about 4 weeks. However, the biggest hassle has been insurance. We were on COBRA during this time and now are having a real hard time getting our health insurance back. She was on a three-way conference call yesterday for over an hour with the new insurance company, a COBRA rep and herself. The COBRA rep keeps telling the insurance company that we have been insured this whole time. The insurance company doesn't want to sign us up at a good rate because they suspect we have not been on any insurance plan. We are now signed up with insurance, but our name doesn't show up anywhere in the new insurance company's computer system. This is about the fourth conference call she's had with them.
She keeps telling me that if we need an emergency room visit that we have insurance. I'm not so sure.
Good luck with your new job search and I hope you have better insurance results than what we've had.

On one of the internet news websites a few weeks ago, they claimed that nurses were in a recession-proof occupation. That fact does very little when she gets laid off and it affects you.

Lots of nurse positions open in Ontario. Ironic how it's so close but so far away.
How close are you to Sarnia or Port Huron?

Sorry to hear of your hardship. It's never easy to be told you are not needed anymore. But you will now have time to do things with family and friends that you didn't have before while fully employed. And you will find new work and come through this O.K. It's just the uncertainty and unknown that are hard to deal with. Best of luck to you.

Guess again. It was people like you that dumped Jennifer Granholm on us as governor and it's OK with me if my wife takes unemployment from those dirtbags til she bleeds them dry. It'll teach them a lesson if they haven't already learned it from 6 years of her economic depression.

I wonder everyday too. My wife tells me not to worry, well I do, excspecially with four youngsters running around. Guess if it happens, the gardens will be much bigger this summer. Good luck to you with your situation.

I haven't been on unemployment for awhile- so just curious- what percentage of your former take-home pay is your unemployment check? I've kind of lost touch with whether unemployment is anywhere near enough to keep you going.

Good luck, and keep your chin up. Its the guys with the positive attitudes that get hired.

No it is not socialism. You pay a tax specifically for unemployment. If comes out of every paycheck. It is considered insurance.

Now if you had not specifically contributed to something, and you took others peoples money, then yes that would be socialism.

Gene

Almost but not quite. The unemployment compensation system is like insurance, sort of, but it is 100% employer paid. It's kind of a political hassle in Missouri.

Yeah, and they're always uncertain about when they can take a break. . . Nobody to tell 'em, no employees manual to consult. . .

Sorry to hear of your situation. Hope things bounce back for you soon...and that folks don't accuse YOU of causing the problem, by not turning off your TV.

It's tough to take. My brother got the heave after 31 years in forestry and my brother in law has been 2 years out in the financial field with consultant positions going poof. I've done contract work for 5 years now and I'm wonering when it's going to dry up as well.
Good Luck to you and everyone else.

No we don't get laid off or fired just slowly starved out with more taxes, and health insurance increases..we have to pay taxes AGAIN on our Social Security money which was taxed when we earned it in the last 45 years and we have to list it AGAIN on out 1040 as INCOME again! AND when we tried to apply to freeze our property taxes we had to list our Social Security as income AGAIN,,,so they could tell us we made too much money to qualify!! And we can;t get any assistance because they count our Social Security as income AGAIN,,and we make too much money!! We only owe for the house , have an 11 year old and 9 year old car and no debts BUT we do have aroound 12,000 a year in medical expense so we're RICH?? Don't know where this is going..Charles

Nearest one is over 50 miles away. She was online looking there last night too, dispite the distance. Guess there wasn't anything.

Raymond Corp of Muscatine, Ia. They make electric forklifts and pallet jacks. I was is service parts shipping. Chris

At least they're trying to help you out as much as they can. I got laid off on Friday the 13th. What makes me mad are several things. About a month prior my hours were cut back to only 28hrs./wk. 2 weeks before the lay off, the boss went on holidays to Mexico and I had full time hours for the time. The boss comes back on Wed. and asks me if I mind going back to part time hours. (How do you answer a question like that?)He was trying to find anything and everything to complain about when he got back. He said sales were starting off good for the month. (he was away) On Friday morning, out of the blue, he says he has to lay me off effective immediatately. I stayed working for a half a day to finish some things. The boss then, for the first time in over 4 months, tells me I did a really good job. I went down to unemployment. I'm 21 hours short of qualifying! If I added up all the times I never took coffee breaks, I'd have way more than 21 hours. When my boss laid me off, he said he'd been thinking about it for 2 weeks! Just as I suspected, I worked my tail off, while he was in Mexico, and as soon as he gets back, I'm laid off. Here's the real kicker, I'm entitled to a week of severance pay because I didn't get any notice. This would give me enough hours for EI benefits. I went to employment standards with info from their website that the appeal court has ruled temporary lay offs must be in writing and specify they are temporary and the effective date. The bozos there accepted the record of employment as the written notice! I have to wait 59 days and if I'm not called back, then they enforce the one week severance pay. Another thing that gets me is that the EI office and employment standards are totally seperate and don't work together because one is federal and one is provincial. How stupid is that? Just because EI benefits are federal shouldn't mean that local offices don't follow the local employment standards code. It's typical Gov't. I guess. SNAFU! Dave

Job terminated June 15th last year after about 26 years. Second/third round of office budget cuts by home furnishings manufacturer- declining market(<-bit of sarcasm here) or something like that. Cobra insurance covering the ongoing cancer treatment follow ups- I might be good for another 7/8 years but docs aren"t promising good odds afterward. Some job application rejection slips- they found somone more suited to their needs- as 30 years younger without medical problem history, not unexpected. Extended unemployment runs out this week- maybe I"ll have to take a big stick and thump a politician, at least jail is warm in winter and medical needs covered (<-mild humor here). Had a bit of warning, saved up some money, survival one way or another (except for cancer odds) probable. At worst I already made a coffin and am transferring and disposing of pack rat piles. Spring coming, garden needs diggin, first little crocus bloom peaking through, Time for coffee. RN

I got laid off about 3 weeks ago.
7 years at that job. Ohh well I am drawing unemployment for the first time in my life of 50 plus years.
And I am enjoying the extra $100/mo that the stimulus provided.

Food stamps next on the list.

Here in Iowa it USED to be about half of your take home pay, but thanks to a former Catholic Repub. Governor, the rules were changed to give you more money if lots of kids and less money if single. Still , the premium is the same for both workers. BTW, Now income tax is due on your benefit.

As part of porkulus package, income tax on at least part of your unemployment has been suspended for at least this year.

Husband of my secretary had a job that paid about $18 an hour, I think- got laid off, now getting unemployment equivalent to $12.80 per hour- so won't take any of the $10 an hour jobs that seem to still be available around here.

There was a job advertised a week ago for a doctors office. Offering a whopping $14.75 an hour. She laughed at it at the time. She checked into it yesterday and it was filled. Must be somebody more desperate than she was a week ago.

Good luck on the food stamps. In my case, the un employment was enough that I didn't qualify for food stamps.

Also depends on how secure you retirement is, if the government has to bail it out or take it over it might go to half or less.

Doesnt sound like a smart thing to do....sizing down the service dept. The company must want to really pi$$ off the customers.

Go to any local gun shop/store and apply for a job. Guns are flying off the shelves faster then they can make em.
I know that some gun manf. are hiring cause sales are Way up.

Our hours have beencut to 32 for a while now, and some of us get a week off now and then. I have had a couple lately. Get 361 a week for unemployment and they told me last week that a new ruling just came in that the first 2400 of unemployment is not taxed. Take home more for a week unemployment than for a 32 hr week at work!

Unemployment insurance is NOT entirely paid by the employer. It's figured into your wage. Your employer, no matter who it is, does nothing for free.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. It should be a lesson to all of us to establish some sideline and some contacts in the "underground economy". No one is immune from economic problems and if anyone is just now realizing this, well, you're about 6 months behind the curve. Get rid of as much debt as you can, get rid of the garbage like extra cars and toys like the jet ski and golf club membership and put some money away if you can. For goodness sake, dump the credit cards!

Hey Chris - Sorry to here about the layoff, but I'm "guessing" it may be short lived.

Caterpillar has announced major layoffs around here - but I think that is globaly driven. Everything I read indicates that the stock market and unemployment rises to signal the end of this "drought"
Couldn't tell there is a recession/depression in Peoria with the exception of home real estate,I guess.

Let me know if you run out of things to do and I will pull some of the Fleetlines up to have you work on them!

Jim

stopped at a gun shop in South Lyon and there was no handgun ammo at all. I was able to buy powder and bullets for re-loading.

Sorry about your luck, I was laid off due to downsizing 1st week of november thru the company was paid thru 1st of Jan. really enjoyed time with Kids and even the wife, Went back to work last and really P'Oed the wife I had been picking up and dropping off the Boys running errands and such for 5 months and she doesnt like it now she has to do it, But 1st paycheck came and she has now decided that its not that bad to get alittle more grub money, Enjoy your time off and hang in there.

He would be a fool to take a job for $10 a hour when he is getting paid $12.80 or $512.00 a week to stay home.

Louisiana makes it worth your while to find another job as fast as you can. Max benifit you can get no matter how much you made in the past is $258.00 a week. That figures out to $6.45 a hour at 40 hrs.

Ive been to Michigan over quite a few years since the 1990s.At first you all had a nnalert Governor say in 1993.The roads were so rough that I broke at least one trailer spring every time I went up there.1991-2002 John M Engler, nnalert.Thats why your state is over run with Mexicans.Farming is ruined.Lots of other problems you have are because of that jerk.Since you had nnalert the roads are getting fixed. The industry leaving is more Bushs fault than your Governor. Not that your governor is all that good, but she is better than the crook she replaced.Like all of the other Northern States your alls taxes are too high and your government doesnt work for you.You all need to revolt. Now to get on here and blame it on your Governor because you dont like her is one thing.I see her as a slight improvment over what you had.Yes your state is a mess, but you should be happy its going back up instead of down. The last thing Michigan needs is a bunch of retarded nnalert running it again. It could use better politicians, but thats not nnalert.

Auto makers are crooks,at least they are now,and they arent going to come back to Michigan like they were.Best thing to do is leave if you can.Take a trip to Texas some time and see how much stuff they have.Thats what voting 2 Bushs in for President did. They have cities that exploded with growth in the 1990s and they did it with cheap Mexican labor and being crooks.Everything that moved out of Michigan is probably in Texas now.Enough of your "Conservative" crap.Im so tired of hearing that stupid stuff it makes me physically sick enough to puke.nnalert have ruined this country.Every small town, farming, even the military has gone downhill under the nnalert wanna be dictators. The only people doing better are crooks(you arent one of them are you)and Mexican illegals.Ill bet Mexicans in Michigan can find a job,but people from Michigan cant.I guess you all wont pick apples for nothing or 20 of you live in a 2 room apartment and eat hot dogs.Mexican and other illegals are all over the place working for very little pay, filling up jobs poor people once did.Gripe about that if you want things to get better.First thing that needs done is get rid of "right to work laws"because every nnalert run state is that way, overrun with Mexicans and other illegals.Get some laws that say if you come in this country you wont get a job until you speak English.Plus there will be no more 20 people that cant speak English and all of them have the same Social Security number.Yeah thank your right to work nnalert legislaters all over the country, causing this problem.Thats just a few of very, very many problems caused by your heros. It would take months to relate just what these so called Conservatives did to our country. Its so ridiculously stupid. The same old give the workers less pay, less insurance,or none,no security, and now slave wages so the rich people can have more of everything. Now the nnalert who used to help working people are just like them, corrupt as they are.Another thing is there are too many"dual"citizens in our government. Most of them are from Israel. There are so many of them on both sides it looks like a takeover, and thats why we dont get anything done. All these neocons are interested in is war.Thats bad because they so blindly blow money, and dont care about the consequences, that they are going to destroy our country, way of life, everything. They are evil.Evil is running it now.You cant have a Jimmy Carter abundant running the country, and you cant have a Bush conservative running the country.nnalert arent tough guys.nnalert arent stupid.Every good thing about this country came from nnalert and 1 nnalert,Teddy Roosevelt.nnalert or nnalert is not the answer, its the man.Nobody but an idiot thinks like a Nixon or Bush or Cheney or Carter or Reagan for that matter. We may wish we had a Carter before this mess is over.Yet its going to be hard for these people to screw up as bad as Bush.At least these ones can say they were trying to fix it.Just what can Bush say about this fiasco? He was asleep at the wheel?Seems like everything he did was wrong to me,and I couldnt see where he tried to fix much of anything except Halliburtons bank account.By the way,Halliburton is in Texas too.

I have just got to say, you are totally clueless. I have lived in Michigan all of my 35 years and the roads are in no better shape now under Granholm then they were under Engler. Those of us who actually live in the state know that at least Engler knew how to encourage business, which means jobs. Since the roads are the only thing you seem to be versed in, I can tell you flat out that we had better driving conditions on the majority of our roads in the late 90s early 2000s than we do now by far. look at the stretch of 31 in the SW corner than was started 10 years ago but we are to pi$$ poor to finish the last 4 miles of it, so instead all traffic is routed over to 94 for 4 miles and then they can get back on 31 North.
You can create what ever kind of pretty picture you want but Granholm has done nothing in our states favor. Even a few folks who helped put her there,RR, have realized it. Only a day late and a few dollars short.
