my JD tractor is making a hissing sound, and hesistates, when using the loader. Also, the steering will tighten up and will not turn to the right when this happens. Hydraulic fluid is full. What is causing the problem? Thanks..

Sounds like trans pump is not offering the main pump any oil, thus the hissing sound. The first thing you need to do is pull the screen, clean it, and change the filter.. then top off with the correct level of oil as per the dipstick in the back.

Holding the clutch down for **extended** periods of time WILL cause this to happen.

Put a test gauge on it and see if your charge pump pressure drops off
If the pressure drops off then check the hyd. filter and sump screen for metal flakes that may of came from failed brakes.

are you using the right oil?

My International 574 was doing that when I bought it used. I took the hydraulic filter out and it was filled with little rubber particles from a recently used hydraulic cylinder gone bad before I bought the tractor. It works and sounds fine now.

Loader valve may be leaking internally. Dis-connect return line and check to see there's no flow while valve is in neutral position. Also remove hyd filler cap an check for spraying oil with 3 pt raised. Both these tests should be done with engine running & drive clutch engaged.

New problem or gradually appeared?
How are the loader hydraulics plumbed into the tractor hydraulics?
Is there a manual or electric de-stroker on the pump?
How long since you serviced the filter and screen? What kind of oil has been added to the system?

A hissing sound is not usually what cavitation sounds like. When the front pump is starving for oil, it usually chatters. Sounds more like an internal leak.
Seems if there is an internal leak, it will also be an area that gets pretty hot, fast.

Does the loader all of a sudden work better when you're holding the steering wheel to the right then? My 1020 all of a sudden had a problem where I had to turn the steering wheel all the way one way and hold it there for the loader to work. It was a spool in the power steering unit. I think what it was was,the priority valve was sending oil through the bad spool so it wasn't going to the loader valve until I held it all the way around one way to stop the oil flow through the steering unit. I had to take the steering box off, take it to the dealer and have it rebuilt.

Thanks for all the responses. IT has been a while since the hydraulic filter has been changed. The loader is a Bush Hog, and the problem has been gradual. Seems like it quits when I rev up the engine, and when it is warm also. But at times it just hangs up and doesnt move up or down, and the steering wheel will not turn to the right at all during those hang up times.
