OT Evergreen loss

I have lost several of my pines this past year. Just seem to die and turn brown. Others next to them seem to be ok for the present. They are trees with the long needles if that would make the difference. Is there a type of evergreen that would be best to plant? Thanks!!!!!

I'd suggest finding out what killed them before planting any more. If it's pine bark beetle any trees that are under stress are susceptible. The pine bark beetle has devastated huge areas in the southwest and Rockies in the past decade or so. I hope in your case it's something more benign.

Cedars are next to impossible to kill, and they make a very nice windbreak. They're also free if you know where to look.

Yup its that beetle.

They generally only affect the Scotch Pines.

I was told to plant White Pine or Spruce trees.

The beetle likes Scotch Pines that are 20 to 30 years old. Does not go after the younger ones.

Sounds like the pine beetle. Make sure that you get the old trees away from the good ones. If you leave them up or the wood in the area it can harbor the beetle and then they will move into other trees.

Cedars are good to plant.

soft needles, w/5 in a tuck? white pine,, could be a root funcus. also remove a section of bark & look for signs of insects..do remove tree asap best to give to someone w/ outdoor woodburner,, that does not have pine trees in their yard

Not sure about insects, but I know from experience that Scotch pines have a short life span and will just up and die. I switched to White pines about 20 years ago and have been pleased.

Cant remember the name of the disease, but call your local forest ranger, they will know, here in North Dakota, they tell me we get this from not having cold winters,I guess we are suppose to have below zero weather for a week.Heck this winter its been all below zero!

Also I quit planting blue spruce and scotch pines, and went to Black Hills Spruce,(supposedly native tree)they do not get the diseases the others do.I usually plant by hand 200 of them on my little farm each year.
