JD 70 Carb Adjusting

I admit that I'm not good with carb's, but I need some help. I got the 70 running, starts good after the motor overhaul. New points and condenser and plugs. It will only run decent with the choke pulled about 1/2 way out. The carb has 1 large adjusting screw in the bottom of the bowl and 2 small ones, one on each barrel. I think it's not getting enough fuel. Should I open the one on the bottom or the 2 little ones? Where do you set them to start from? I tried opening the small screws about 1/2 turn but didn't seem to help any. I drove it around a little with the choke pulled about 1/2 way, and when you push the throttle full ahead, it will make just a little black smoke and then clear up. It accelerates smoothly. Any suggestions? Chris

Rule of thumb is all the way in and back each one out 2 rounds and then start your adjusting from there. Hope this helps

To adjust the idle correctly on the 2 barrel carburetor you have to ground out one plug wire and adjust the opposite side adjustment screw. Then stop the engine replace this wire, swap to the other side and do it the same way.

How did you correctly rebuilt the engine without having the service manuals? To know the clearances and torque values?
The carb needs to have every little passage cleaned. Dunking it in cleaner overnight and using the air compressor will not work.
Then set the float level, main and idle as per the operator manual.
