OT Caravan Trans Cooler

My wife has a 06 dodge caravan. She wants a hitch on to pull a small trailer 2500lbs max. I told her to just use the Super C, she did not think that was very funny!!! Anyway should I look at putting a transmission cooler on if I put a hitch on? If so has anyone had expierence installing a cooler, easy or hard, any special tools needed, extra fluid, etc ?

I'm not a Dodge expert, but I would say that the transmissions in those are suspect. I don't know if towing would exacerbate the situation, but I would Google it.

Hi, I alway's have a trailer in tow with our /05 van, 3.8, never as of this date required a cooler for the transmission. Give it a try first without the transmission cooler and if it heats up, then install the cooler. this is our second van . cheers, Murray

Have you read your owner's manual to see what it says about towing? That might be a good place to start.

I have read the owners manual cover to cover. All it talks about is a trailer tow prep package. It gives a chart of weights, number of people, luggage etc, but nothing about a cooler. I am just wondering if anyone has installed a cooler and how hard it might be ? Guessing if I go to the local dodge dealership it will cost me an arm and a leg. Just trying to save a buck or 2.

Here's my install on my 97 Grand Caravan... I think yours should be similar.

If you need more advice, the guys over at allpar.com are really helpful and there is a minivan specific forum.

I towed a 4x6 U-haul last summer and it handled it just fine, had around 1620 lbs total on the trailer and 5260 on the van.

If the car was mine I'd stick an aux tranny cooler on it even if you never plan to pull a trailer with it! AFIAC factory stock coolers - especially so on the Caravan - are marginal at best.

Aftermarket cooler kits run $50 - $60 or so (look at Autozone or your local UHaul dealer). I've installed several - they are straightforward to do right in your own driveway.
