What do you think about losing the star rebate for property taxes? Dident Patterson say a year ago that "New yorkers need tax relife" Ya he helped us out,. I have a few words to call him, but here isent the place.lol JinBROKENY

I think they passed the budget for NY and they wont give us the STAR rebate anymore. They also are putting a deposit on bottled water,( I dont care I dont buy bottler water, I HAVE A WELL gov Pat) just like soda cans. How can other States manage there money and NY cant? Now we have to take it up the $@#.???

what a bunch of crap... it's all about supporting the massive welfare role for the big rotten apple... welfare upon welfare .. the real scam is on us UpStaters. What do you want to bet he doesn't get elected next term, and, then we will have to start all over again with ledgislation to propose the rebate once again . like I said " what a bunch of crap ! "

Maybe I'm alone on this, but I actually support Patterson. He's actually making the tough decisions. 1000's of state layoffs, cuts in funding and increases in taxes are needed to cut the deficit that previous administrations have created for us. As I understand it, the state budget ballooned from taxes on Wall Street. Now that part of the state is not doing as well, we aren't getting the tax money and need to make cuts. Every special interest group is screaming, but the money needs to come from somewhere.

As I understand it only the STAR rebate is being eliminated, not the STAR program itself. So we will still get the reduced property tax rates, but we won't get the $400 check in the mail this fall. I haven't bought into whole stimulus check idea and feel that the state needs the money more than I do... which is why they collected it in the first place.

Just my $.02 thanks for listening...

Your wrong, what I heard on the radio was no state jobs will be cut, They were talking about cutting 8900 state jobs, but they dident. Also the budget spending went up almost 10%. You like him?

Jim your right, he has to KNOW HE WILL NOT BE ELECTED AGAIN, if not than hes a bigger idiot than I give him credit for.

Unlike the Feds, the State can't just print money when they run out. So its either make tought decisions or go bankrupt...

Well, I don't get to listen to the radio much but I do read the paper. So, as of last night the newspaper indicated that the layoffs were going to proceed starting on July 1. New reports indicate that the budget spending went up by 8.7%. Depending on what online artice I read, that is largely due to items that the legislature added back into the governors budget. It also looks like the STAR program will still provide $3 billion in tax relief, as I mentioned before. Only the rebate has been eliminated. It will probably been a few days before all the news agencies get their stories straight. The legislature won't even vote on it until tomorow, so there is still more time for changes.

Yes, I do like Patterson. I'm not in complete agreement with him, but I doubt I will ever be in complete agreement with a politician. I'm also not a nnalert in case you wondered. He wasn't elected to be a governor so he doesn't have the political agenda they usually have. He is faced with some tough choices and seems to be finding some original solutions. He doesn't seem particularly bothered by making enemies, I find that a refreshing quality in a politician.

Reasons like are why I usually avoid political discussions on this forum.

We also have one of those welfare governors here in Michigan who loves to tax and spend. Ya they make tuff decisions, about when and how to spend and rasie taxes, it is called over spending and not managing the budget whithin the means.

I'm so conservative I make Rush nervous, but I can respect part of what Patterson is doing. At least he's addressing the problems. Spitzer never did and Pataki was a big spender.

Nope, Patterson is a one term GOv. Andy Cuomo will be the next Gov and we'll be right back in the same boat as with his father, that freakin moron. Higher taxes, fewer jobs, more regulations and all for the good of NYC!

Anyone else in favor of making NYC it's own State and moving the Capitol to Syracuse?

per the Gazette, the "middle class" rabate is history, basic star not touched

from what I read, the rebate was started to offset local tax increases

Mr. Patterson is doing a pretty good job considering the lousy hand he was dealt, my wife thinks I'm going even softer in the head saying that about a blind demycrat from Harlem

The “great minds” running this state simply don’t get it.

On account of the poor economy and working residents continuing to flee the state, projected state revenues this year will decline by 20%. Yet the new budget INCREASES state spending by 9%. How can this possibly be justified?!!!

The state is adding/increasing in state “fees” on everything from bottled water to electricity to cell phones to DMV fees to nursing homes. Then add the loss of the STAR property tax rebate coupled with a 13% increase in my local property taxes. I figure it’s gonna cost me an additional $2.5K to $3K this year just to continue to live here.

AFIAK we should fire all 200,000 state employees along with EVERY elected state official - including Gov Patterson (who ironically was never elected thanks to philandering ex-gov Spitzer…) and start over. I don’t see how we could possibly do any worse.

The basic and enhanced STAR exemption for full-time New York residents was not eliminated. It remains the same. What Patterson first proposed was to eliminate those extra rebate checks, which were always temporary anyway. He also tried to put in property tax limits based on income, but it was knocked down.

I'm not totally against our new "accidental" governor yet. He's said a few things I actually like. I think he'd like to put in some real reform, but in New York, seems that's impossible without some sort of revolution. We are drowning in a sea of whining liberals here, who can't wait to donate everybody else's time, property, and money (but rarely offer their own). New York City is half the population of the entire state, and people like me in rural areas are considered ignorant odd-balls by the City politicians running this place. Sissy-boy Schumer said recently that "upstate New York" is like Montana. Nice place to visit, but who'd want to live there? Boy, would I love to punch that drooling idiot. We here in rural New York have all the New York City water! I wish we could turn it off and let them drink out of the Altantic Ocean they now use as a giant NYC toliet. Better yet,let Shumer swim in the Hudson or Harlem River. Maybe that would get us some representation.

Patterson made a few comments about the labor and teachers unions (that hold all of us residents hostages). He stated yesterday that it's reasonable to have a percentage of State-worker layoffs equal to the private sector lay-offs. Boy did the Union officials start to whine.

Hey, I've lived through Harriman, Rockefeller, Carey, Cuomo, Pataki, Spitzer, etc. I wish I'd been around when Teddy Roosevelt was running New York. In my life, Pataki has been the only conservative governor - and he was unable to make any substantial change. He did, however, add record acres of land to the Adirondack Park. He and Teddy would probably have gotten along well.

I'm getting to the point I want to get the heck out of New York - but it's not Patterson's fault.
I might move to northern Michigan - how's that for an idiotic plan? At least I won't have to pay any inspection fees on my fleet of cars and trucks.
