Was over on the painting area and posted. But have not gotten and answer to my question. Perhaps one of you other there knows.
Question: I have an old galvanized metal chicken nest. There is some rust on it and I have sanded the best I can on it. So whats next? I want to paint it but don't know if I need a certain type of paint or just regular metal paint will work?

You need at least a primer rated for bare metal and zinc or galvanized. Read the labels on the paint cans. Look for paints made for gutters that are sometimes galvanized.

if it is a new or slightly weathered galvanised roof, you will need a primer coat first, other wise the paint wont stick unless you acid etch the galvanizing. valspar makes a galvanized white primer, i think it is called galva-white. valspar also has a dtm roof finish, direct to metal, that can go over a weathered finish. tractor supply should have the paints.

Thanks for return comments. Needed to know this so I can go get me something to work with to finish it in the morning.

I use rusty iron primer by Rustoleum on rusty galvanized buildings Then you can use either latex or oil over it. This stops the rust and as I said you can paint any color you want over the top. I have several buildings that I painted 10 years ago that look good yet.

When i was akid, the folks bought a new house with galvanized gutters put on it. The folks wanted them painted to match the house and they gave me a bucket of vinegar to wipe on the gutters before I painted them. did and the paint was still on them when they sold the house 10 years later. I think the mild acid etchees the surface to make the paint stick better. I think there are commercial products that do the same thing. they use a dilute acid to etch the surface before you pait it. I also remember a galvanize primer that I think Rustoleum makes and it has a weak acid in it.

Thanks Jerry,

I didn't ask this particular question , but useful information.

I heard the term used a long time ago that you had to "Pickle" the metal first to have it hold paint.
Must have been what they meant.

I've used Rustoleum's COLD GALVANIZING COMPOUND with great success.
Comes in a spray can in the Rustoleum section of Home Depot.

It's basically zinc particles in a can.

It even adheres to my boat anchor which spends a fair amount of time immersed in salt water.

wipe or mop the galvanized metal with a abundant amount of vinegar first. let dry and proceed to paint with and good decent enamel paint. vinegar will make the paint adhere better to galvanizing.

Sears used to sell a product called "Gutter Grip" I used it on aluminum storms then painted them white - 20 years later they still look good.

Since wife had her back operated on. I have not been on here much. Taken care of her.. cooking, house cleaning and laundry and my chickens and yard.. etc etc. Don't have much time. Doctor say's she will be laid up for another month. She is not allowed to lift are do much of any thing. So I got it all.... good dang thing she is worth it. lol

Vinegar works. I used a handheld wire brush and brushed lightly after spraying with vinegar. Wiped down with mineral spirits and painted with enamel. David..............
