Just bought some "Timothy/Orchard Grass" for the equine pasture ornament in 3x3x8 bales.

Price was 271.50/ton.

Also, these two bales seem to be a lot more "stemmy" than last purchase.

Comments on price and/or quality.

Thanks...Rick in NC

Hay is about worthless here in Minnesota this year. Down a buck a bale from last year - small squares. Lucky to get $2. Round bales have never been worth much. Large squares aren't so common yet.

Last year started wet here, but became dry for long spells afterwards. Consequently, lots of hay made around here. Some are trying to sell small squares @ $3-4, but I don't think there are many takers, aside from some who have a lawn ornament without pasture... ;>

prices dropped this year in MD. I had to sell my small squares for less than $4 each to move. Since Timothy is usually cut when it is mature later in the season the Orchardgrass will then be too stemmy. Orchardgrass is best 1st cut early in season before the seed head comes out. 2nd and 3rd cuts are much less stemmy and with no Orch grass seed heads. Don't know about your hay, but people often wait too long in the season in cutting Orch grass hay.

Well, in my area of MN I can buy beef cattle hay for $30 a ton this year. I suppose horse hay may be a bit more, but the highest I have seen recently for good quality hay is $80 a ton.

I guess I better start shopping for some and stock up. I seen the Morrison County Record has about 20 ads but most do not have prices. I"m down to 5 bales and really considering stockpiling a bunch of hay and buying some bred cows to keep until fall. Havent made up my mind yet.

Yes Finn, 2/3 of my orchard grass the last two years has been cut after it bloomed. There was rain in the 5 day forecast all spring summer, fall. But thick green kept growing below the seed heads, and my customers were happy to pick it up in the field for $3.50 per bale.

yep - same for me with weather and other things too. Lots of horse people around here like to see the Orch grass seedheads and think it's better that way. It's not the same as with Timothy. Let's hope for a good weather year - gettin the hay itch already. Good Luck

Grass hay seems to range from $120 to $160 or so a ton in western Washingon- we paid $4 for small squares that ran 35 bales to the ton, so $140 a ton.

Price comparison don't do you much good, but I pay 25-30 bucks for that size bail in Germany. I'd (and the horses too) would rather have it put up a week or so later than cow hay. Gives them something to chew on.

If it is stemmy, maybe it was late cut. Fall of 07 we were getting $140 a ton. 3 bucks for a small square and $30 for round bales, horse hay. Still the same far as I know for the square and round, Wont know about the ton until next month when we send out 700 bales.
