A Little Excitement Today

I thought today would be a good day to burn the weed/crop stubble in the garden. It seemed a bit windy, but not real bad. I wetted the grass outside the garden border, got my wife, and lit a couple of matches. Man, did that fire take off. I had a hose handy, just in case, but the water pressure pushed the connection between the hose and the female end out. So while I'm frantically trying to get another hose hooked up and yelling at my wife, who had her own little flare up, the fire is moving toward the woods.

Finally, got hoses connected and the fire under control. Whew!! I'm getting too old for so much excitement.

Those little fires get big real fast. My JD 5020 caught fire due to a electrical short. I was near my el camino which had the fire extinguisher. I got it and put the fire out. You wouldn't think there is much to burn, but with years of oil and crud it was a hot fire. I started a fire from a rock strike while mowing that gets the heart pumping also. Stan

No kidding things can get out of control fast.
A few years back. I had a couple of old rotten hay bales set out in my wintering pasture, so my bison would tear them apart and spread it out some.well come spring they had'nt tached them yet.so when i was harrowing the manure on a dry calm day i decided to burn them [BIG BIG mistake]
first, they would't burn, they glowed and smoldered.
Then the wind picked up and started blowing the glowing embers across the field, starting little fires along the way, spreading like wild fire, all i could to try to keep it in hand was racing back and forth on the fire edge with the harrows to keep it under control.[Gawd these buffalo chips burn] it took the better part of the day before finally the wind died down and i could put it out. I was all by myself and no phone in the tractor. No time to drink eat or even p!!

One day i'll never forget,pewww

Local guy had an old smokehouse that he wanted to burn. It was real close to the house, and his wife wouldn't let him light it. One friday evening a neighborhood couple stopped by to visit, and the wimmin decided to run into town to pick up something. As soon as they were out of sight, Fred struck a match to the smokehouse. Things were going pretty good - using a couple garden hoses to keep it kinda under control. They failed to notice that the power line passed right over the smokehouse on the way to the meter. Line burned in two, and of course the pump quit. Like to burned the whole place up by the time the fire dept arrived. The wimmin followed the fire truck to the house. Much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth.

82 year old man here was helping put out a grass fire caused by ashes from a burn barrel. His jeans caught on fire aand he suffered severe burns. Moral of the story is old folks cant do things like they used to.

We had a guy try to burn some leaves a few years ago, fire got away from him, he died of a heart attack trying to put the fire out.
