Recently restored 1953 Allis CA. Engine runs OK but will only run if carb choke shutter is half-way. Shut, engine will stall, open completely engine will like get too much air. Notice smoke when moving choke shutter. Is something plugged in carb. I don't think rings are bad. Is is a Marvel Schebler carb. Thanks

Something must be plugged in your carb or you have a vacum leak.

Does it idle fine or just die when you rev it up? What engine speed does it run good at?

You may have a vacum leak which it sounds like mostly to me. By closing the choke will raise the vacum thus causing it to run better.

Is it the original or correct carb? Too big of a carb can cause this problem also.

Hope these tips help you out.

Sounds like your main jet passage could be plugged.Common with the MS TSX carbs.Take it apart, soak a few hrs in carb cleaner (if possible)or solvent and use compressed air to blow through all passages both directions.

You might need a carb kit if gasket tears.Take it apart gently.

Are you sure the choke is not going closed the other way? My bro's tractor broke the choke stop allowing the choke to overtravel in the other direction. Drilled for a spring pin and fixed the problem. If it is indeed full open, then you have a passage plugged. Not uncommon.

You may have a weak spark (weak spark will ignite a richer mixture) or an air leak around the carbs metering section. The usuall culprits are worn throttle shaft, leak at the carb to intake manifold, a rusty or cracked intake manifold or a leaking gasket atthe cylinder head to manifold connection.
