O/T new bicycle laws in Oregon

The Idiots in our legislator are contemplating a new law.

It will give Cyclist the right to run stop signs and red lights. No kidding, they say its to hard to stop and put your foot down on a bike.

Of course they will not have the right-a-way so I guess it will be open season on Bikers, Hey I hope it goes for Motorcycles too it will be a good way to get rid of the Hells Angles.

The might as well do that in Calif also. The bicycles never stop at stop signs. What really gets my heart pounding is when a pack of 30-40 decide to take up the complete road, horns do no good. Stan

When a cyclist is riding in traffic, he is still required to follow the same rules as vehicles - and hope the vehicle drivers see him. The Oregon bill is called a "dead on red" law and it is intended to let a bicyclist roll through an empty intersecion without stopping even if there is a stop sign or red light. The bicycle rider can only roll through against a traffic light or stop when there is no other traffic in or approaching the intersection.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Oregon has become such a abundant state. It's the ajenda of our leftist leaders and their hatred of the automobile. Get ready it's only just the beginning. I'm sure they will try to tax or outlaw any internal combustion engine built before 2000. All in the name of saving the planet from "global warming" Just think what that will do to our hobby. Sorry for the rant, I'm just sick of seeing our great nation going down the toilet.

Let's apply the same to cars too? Shouldn't have to stop if there is no one else around, it just wastes gas. Drive right through if no one in the way with a car.

Then why have the stop sign or light at all - just go through whenever it's clear?????

Nothing confusing about it at all! Sure. Nope.

Sure and how many of these Idiots on Bikes are going to stop if they see a car.

2 have been killed so far when a truck is turning right and the biker thinks he has the right-a-way. because he in the bike lane.

YES! and its the best thing about this state. Puts lots of young people and retired folk to work an keeps the Ladies hands from smelling like gas and our prices are the same as Washington and California.

'Here', they have such a law, but it's because at some of our 'smart' red lights, bikes are not heavy enough to trigger the sensor to change the red light to green and they have to wait 'til an automobile rolls up beside them (mult-lane road); if only 2-lane, they have to wait 'til someone approaches from other direction or the light will not change.

I'm not familiar with the Oregon law, but as someone who used to ride a bike in the city, I can say there are circumstances where it's safer if you don't stop. Let's say you're on an uphill grade, pumping along at 5-10 miles an hour. You're practically stopped anyway, and you come to an intersection with a stop sign. You can see that there's plenty of time to make it across IF YOU DON"T STOP, but if you stop you're going to have a heckuva time getting across the street before a car comes.

Bicycles take a long time to accelerate, and a bicycler usually has a better view of traffic than a car because he's sitting up high and moving relatively slow.

What IS incredibly dangerous, and most motorists have no problem with it, is bikes riding on sidewalks. Good way to get nailed by a car coming out of driveway.

I bike a lot in the summer, sounds like a great idea to me. Nothing like getting a 184$ ticket and points off your car driving license for rolling though a stop sign on an empty road on a bike.

Idiots on bikes is a whole separate problem. They make the drivers mad at the next bicycle rider they see, and bad things can happen.

Maybe the person making up the bill had a bad incident with a bike rider and is trying to get rid of the bike riders.
They wanted to try something like that here in one of our provinces that wanted to seperate from Canada. They where going to get the cars to drive on the left side of the road, and if that worked OK they would get the trucks to do the same also after the first testing was done.

If you have a titanium, carbon fiber, or aluminum bicycle those sensors won't ever trip. They don't even know you're there.

They ought to take all the damned bicycles off the road. The highways were built for motor transport and that is what belongs there....motorized vehicles.....2, 4, or more wheeled.

Nothing galls my balls anymore than some Yuppie with his pointy streamlined helmet, goggles, and spandex underwear..."out for a ride/tour" on a county road and then having to try to keep from squashing his skinny a$$ with my truck and loaded GN trailer.

Maybe enough of them get splattered, they"ll decide to stay off the road........that motorized vehicles fund via fuel taxes.

You really, really, need to look at the history of road paving in North America. Dirt was just fine for farm equipment and horses, and your 4WD truck and trailer would do quite well.

You really need to understand that I/we do not live in historical times. And, were it not for fringe groups like the Amish, the horse and buggy would be gone from the roads.

I don't know why you would wish to lapse in some spiel about when and where paving began...that is totally irrelevant. The Romans didn't have trucks and if they had..chariots would have been banned from their roads. Bicyclists would have been speared.

I live in a small town just west of Portland. That new law will decrease the ticket income for the city. This is the only town that I know of where the cops regularly write tickets for Bicycles not stopping for the stop signs.
I don't think those idiots that think they own the roads on their bikes need anything more to swell their heads.

I ride my bicycle a lot, and I am grateful for drivers who drive in a responsible manner. I bicycle because I want to save money, get more exercise, see more of the world around me and reduce my oil use, and I don't see why I shouldn't have a right to ride provided I am responsible and paying attention. What I do not like is snowmobiles driving around on the road, especially when driven by knuckleheads, which seems to usually be who is on those things.

They already do that in Dallas. When the light changes, you do not want to be the first car through the intersection because its almost a sure thing that someone is going to run the red light.

P.S. Cars in Dallas don't like pedestrians either. I have had many cars get real close as I cross the streets walking from where I park to the office.

I almost hit a speeding bicyclist that ran a RED LIGHT in the University district of Seattle on Tuesday. If I had not been watching him, and had accelerated normally when my traffic light changed to green, I don't see how I could have avoided hitting the bike. What an idiot!

The bicyclist was not a child, but was probably in his 20's and wearing clothing similar to what bicycle racers wear. I would have loved to have had the chance to chew him out, but he rode through the intersection and was nearly hit by a car going the opposite way that I was. And I had not authority.

I sure hope they don't make similar conduct LEGAL and codified in my state. Bicycle riders are supposed to follow all traffic rules that motorized vehicle drivers are responsible for following as of now. I can sure see the possibility of lots of lawsuits occurring if suddenly the bikes don't have to follow the rules of the road anymore. And lots of hurt or dead bicyclists.
