craftsmen 18.5 kohler magnum

My dad has had this mower for several years now and it has always had trouble starting up in the spring. I usually just poor a little bit of gas down the carb until it gets going and then it has no more problems. This year it refuses to start and i dont know what to do i dont want to just start tinkering with it like a little push mower because he cant really afford to replace it if something else goes wrong. Any suggestions?

You need to remove the plug wire and hold it 1/4" away from the plug while some cranks over the engine and see if you have good hot spark. If you do, replace the plug and see if it will start. If there's no fire to the plug you probably have a defective coil. Hal

If you let it set all winter with out some kind of fuel stabilizer in the gas, your carbureator is gummed up. It's a good idea to put 1oz of Stabil per gallon in your fuel year around. Pouring gasoline in the carb throat can wash out what lub is left in the cylinder wall after setting all winter and score the cylinder.

If it"s a kolher I wouldn"t advise unhooking spark pulg and turning over unless you want to replace ign on it. Kolhers don"t like that. Manuel doesn"t reccomend it.
