Well I was told by a battery shop to first unhook the battery from the vehicle or tractor . Then hook up the charger & set it at 6 volts . Let it trickle charge for a couple hours or overnite . Then switch the charger to 12v for about 2 minutes before disconnecting the charger . What the 12v does is give it an extra shot . Its worked for me so far . Also before reinstalling the battery to service , take all cable connections loose & shine the areas up good . Wire brush the threads of bolts used plus the battery posts . What i do & recommend is smear some dielectric grease on all connections as installing proceeds . Caution , be sure you have extremely heavy battery cables to avoid problems . HTH ! God bless, Ken

Get a hydrometer so you can take a reading to know what the sp is then you will kmow if the batt us ready for service. Just use the 6v for a while and keep checking the sp

When disconnecting your battery cables disconnect your ground cable first. This is the one that goes to the vehicle frame. I'm not talking neg. or pos. I mean the ground. I don't know if you have a neg ground or pos ground vehicle.

When you hook them back up hook the ground up last. This will lower the possibility of creating any sparks.

If you disconnect the hot wire first you run a chance of the wrench touching the frame of the vehicle some where and the hot post at the same time creating a spark and turning your wrench red hot in an instant. Very dangerous!

Most people say it doesn't matter which cable you disconnect first, but they haven't given it much thought then either.

I just use a 6 volt only; no combination; with automatic shutoff and never bother to unhook battery. Have to charge at about every 3 days of use on average. Other charger no longer have was a combination 6-12 with automatic shutoff. When it I think starts getting low I just hook up the charger and leave it on till I am ready to use the tractor.

Hello ken in texas.
With a 12v charger you can hook up a 6 volt battery in series with the 8v and charge the batteries to-gather. It may not charge the 8V 100% but it will be charged enough to start the engine.......... I'm sure: good luck.
Guido.
