O/T Smoking ban

This is off topic, but I know there are people from all over the world and especially the United States on here. Our state government, South Dakota, has just passed a bill outlawing smoking in bars and restuarants. Gov. hasn't signed it yet, I think. Does your state have a complete smoking ban and if so, did it work? Of course, the opponents of the bill say ALL the bars are going to close down. Proponents say they will get BUSISER! I like to idea of being able to go into town and socialize a little, it's the ONLY place to socialize in our town, and be able to come out without smelling like I have been fighting a forest fire. But on the other hand, I am very much against more government regulations. I know the "health" aspect of the ban is a no-brainer. How has a ban treated your state? Just curious.

We don't have a state ban, but some counties have banned it. I live in Livingston county, and smoking isn't banned here. Sure wished it was. I have never heard of a place going out of biz over it.

I don't like the idea of the GOVERMENT bein' able to ban anything, with that said, the ban works great in Louisiana....It is nice to eat a meal and not have to breathe cig. or cigar smoke...rule is something to the effect, smoker must be 25 feet from the door of the store,resturant,whatever.....Now the concern is second hand snuff (HA HA)

here in iowa we have the ban. local bar does not care. he still lets people smoke after the supper hour. I will say when I go in for lunch with wife and kids and people are smoking they will go outside untill the kids leave. that is how it has always been even before the ban.works for everyone around here.

Louisiana has a ban - probably 3 years now. I think Casinos are excluded and a lot of bars ignore it. Waffle house is still full. Seems to me non-smoking and smoking sections were a pretty good compromise for many years but some politicians just aren"t happy unless they can tell everyone what to do.

Was banned in businesses first in Washington, then restaurants, now everywere, including bars. Bars now all have tents or covered areas outside, and it doesn't seem to have cramped anyone's style. I think it was smart to ban in stores, businesses and offices first- so the smokers got used to going outside. Wasn't much of a stretch when they had to do so at restaurants and bars later on.

N.Y. does have a smoking ban. Some bars did go out of business. All saw a drop in business after the ban took effect. I don't know if business picked back up or not. I suspect it did but I doubt that the recovery was 100%. Most smokers just go outside now. Me? I no longer go to bars since the ban I stay home where the beer is cheaper and I can smoke if I want. So there is at least one customer who is no longer a customer. I hope some non-smoker picked up the slack.

We have had a ban in new jersey for years now. believe me no bars closed down because of it and its a much more pleasent not smelling like an ashtray when you get home. but i don't smoke. if i did i know i would not be pleased.

Ohio put a ban on the ballot a year/years ago ? and it passed. No smoking in any business. So far the bars are still open. Some places still smoke inside. They just aren't going to have the man power to enforce it. I'm sure glad I don't have them blowing smoke at me here at work anymore. They would of never needed a law if the smokers had any consideration for others.
I don't like the government forcing/telling others what to do. But I sure do like to be able to work without smoke.

c-man,

I don't know how it works in Tennessee right now. I don't smoke or go to bars, so I don't have any skin in the game personally.

I do know that for a while at least, restaurants and bars were able to continue smoking if they prohibited any one under the age of 21 from entering the establishment. There's a very old, very established coffee shop in Columbia, TN that now has a sign on the door that says that you must be 21 to enter.

I agree with you and the others by the way, I don't like the government telling any business owner how to run his business.

I believe that in the past many people had no idea how much damage cigarette smoke causes to infrastructure. It coats HCAC ducts, discolors paint, stinks, settles in carpets and on furniture. If you have computers or other electronic equipment especially those with cooing fans it coats the internal components and gets drawn into cd/dve drives. The airlines banned smoking years ago due to the damage it caused they said it was for health reasons but most jet aircraft exchange the air within the cabin several times per hour. Much more frequently than a restaurant or bar. Think about a 100 million dollar piece of equipment being damaged because some smoker has to have their fix. They are finding now that it isn't the second hand smoke that is the most dangerous it is the fallout from the smoke over time it is very concentrated with contaminants.

Bavaria (Southern Germany) has a ban in all resteraunts and bars. Some of the bars/clubs went private/members only to beat it. Membership is usually a one time buck for the card (another buck if you lose it). Resteraunts are a no/go and rightly so. Nothing worse than some sh!thead that thinks the world revolves around him and his tobacco.

There was a lot of whining when TN first enacted the ban, but the only comments that I personally hear are positive. Restaurants for years had smoking and non-smoking sections....serviced by the same HVAC systems; sitting in the non-smoking section was kinda like swimming in the non-peeing end of the swimming pool while everyone else was peeing in the other end.

Our Iowa ban started last July 1. I just read in the paper today that the amount of complaints about non-compliance are way down now. If a complaint is filed the bar is given one warning and the majority obeyed after the first warning. It just takes awhile for everyone to adjust. Some small town local bars that don't serve food and have about the same crowd every night still allow it and no one complains about it. The casinos are allowed to have smoking which is why I never go to a casino. I wouldn't mind throwing away twenty bucks once in a while at a casino but I'm not gonna sit there in a smoky haze. Jim

Nebraska has a ban. There are more comments positive than negative.

Five or seven years ago, before the bans even came up, a friendly neighborhood eaterie took the lead and announced a date when the whole place would be non-smoking. People went berzerk and predicted the place would be closed in a month.

The owners held their ground, and the net result was it eliminated several old ladies who would sit for hours drinking coffee and stinking up the place with cigarette smoke without spending any more than the price of a cup of coffee, meanwhile occupying a booth someone buying a meal could have used.

It was actually a relief.

Here is a radical idea. Let the guy who OWNS the business decide who he wants to serve, and wether or not he allows smoking.
And let the public decide if they will patronize his establishment.
Supply - Demand - Citizens owning and controlling their own property. Hmmm that sounds like a country I used to know.

the county has one as needed due to fire danger and a large number of tourists, smoking inside private homes and vehicles only, no smoking outside at all, first offence is 500 bucks fine, no warnings or exceptions, the rules are plainly posted on large signs on every road into the area, in the next town, a local bar owner parked a retired school bus right in front of his place, its a "privatly owned vehicle" and is for bar patrons who just can't do without a smoke, [ smoking is for tobacco only] works very well, in fact since he's apparently the only bar owner so far smart enough to do that his bar business has actually increased

NO way,,,, in the pools I went to, the folks there put a rubber band on the dinks, and a cork in the girls,,, it was as clean as a whistle.

Funny thing on that. Our state Rep,who's a nnalert (don't wanna get into how that happened) owns a bar and is going against his own party on the proposed ban here in Michigan. He seems to think he should be allowed to make his own business decision on it. Fancy that.

Illinois instituted a smoking ban over a year ago. I know it cut down on the number of bars that are open. I also now of several , that to keep in business will allow it to the regulars. The state also just recently added some enforcement teeth to the law, but i haven't heard of anyone being taken to jail for smoking

Yes, as Goose said, Nebraska has that ban-BUT, now they want to not allow smoking in cars, when children are present. Nannyism at is finest! Make cigs illegal, or leave it alone, I say, and I don't even smoke! Like we need more government interference! Greg

I am for the ban. Cigarette smoke takes about 10 min. to give me a roaring headache and it makes James sick.

A little over a year ago, James and I went to an El Chico for dinner. We were in the no smoking section. They sat a group of 4 or 5 just across the railing from us and they immediately lit up. They were only a few feet from us even though we were in the no smoking section and they were in the smoking section. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. We've never gone back.

I think they have a ban in Dallas and several cities around here. Big hoorah about it, but don't know how it has affected the bars & restaurants.

This time around, it's smoking.

The problem is, what will comrade government decide to make "unapproved" next time?

That's how freedom erodes, one increment at a time.

Incidentally, the bars in Pa can allow smoking with a separate room, or being a private club.

Minnesota has the ban and it is a wash as far as the bar population goes. some were lost, some were gained. It sure id nice to take the family to Bar/grill establishments that no longer have smoke filling the top 1/3 of the room.

okla passed it not too long ago,in bars and resturants any way,in my opinion I dont think it hurts resturants too much, but I dont go much to bars anymore.I think its another one of those things where some want to tell everyone else how to live, and I voted against it,but I dont think its hurt the buissnesses I frequent any.I think ,of course I grew up in a different time and in a area thats VERY independent, that its wrong to tell some other folks what to do just because I may not like it,to me thats not the way this country was set up,its just plain socialism.I believe democracy demands we vote for what we believe to be right ,regardless of our personal preferences. If that makes any sense.I do smoke and I cant say its bothered me a lot but if I was still hitting the bars it probably would.now I just eat dinner and get out as quickly as possible.dont sit around and visit with neighbors as much, which in its self is not a good thing because I also believe we lose something of ourselves by not getting other folks ideas, and I'm rambling again ,I apologize.

on the computers all I have to say is what a load of B.S. that is.

The smoke tends to collect on the dust right at the vents which then collects more dust. The dust inside a smokers PC is all at the vents. The dust in a non-smokers PC IS all over the components. I have serviced PCs for 25 years and your not going to pull that line of shutt on me.

I am with Phil in PA on this one.

The government will erode your rights a little at a time.

What is next......No shooting ranges, no Mcdonalds cause it makes people fat, no wood burning stoves cause the smoke is bad.

The state government doesnt give a rip about the people of South Dakota, just one more way to control their lives through legislation. If S.D. government gave a rats butt about the people they would say "we are cutting taxes rates for everyone and the state government is going to lay off 50% of the government leaches".

Madison is smoke free and so are a few other local cities. Wisconsin is still debating it, but I can only hope they make it law. A few bars were hurt, but others found a way to survive. It's still allowed outside, so if they gotta have their fix, they can go outside. Some made outdoor areas for their patrons. Some improved their menu so they could draw a different crowd. Others still allowed it indoors and got a hefty fine from the city.

I was at the auto parts store today just getting some washer fluid for my car, and some dink lit up. Didn't take long for it to reach me on the other end of the store, and I hated every minute of it until I could get out.

Not much to do here in winter but most all the local town have their own laws on smoke'n so they most all have out side patios now and it's pretty nice. Makes every one happy in summer. You can set out side, enjoy a beer and a smoke. Most of the time there is enough wind that non smokers don't fuss too much, and they can always go inside.

I can see both sides of this as you do. What I have to come to beleive is that capitalism always wins. When do gooders try to shut something down, some one will find a loop hole and make money.

Dave

In NY you can't smoke anywhere inside. when they passed the law everybody said the bars would go out of business. I don't think it hurt anybody now when you go in a bar you have to pass a bunch of people out side smoking. it is that way with every store or business.
Ny state loves the smokers they just keep raising the taxes on cigs and the smokers just keep paying it

We have a no smoking law that took affect in the Pittsburgh area, Funny though now they are trying to revise it so the gamblers will show up at the new casinos they are building, to raise money for the town ?? also hurting fire halls in their bingo sessions. They are looking at that also.

I think MA. has a novel idea the want to ban smoking in cigar bars I know that will close them down for good.
Is it nice big brother watching over you.
BTW that state is 90% nnalert!

No smoking in bars or restaurants for several yrs now here in Maine.Cant smoke in youre own car now with anyone in the car under 18.Tobbacco tax goes up 1.20 per pack and 25 bucks a 1lb bag of tobacco one the 1st of April, nationaly!I roll my own so its gonna hurt one way or another. Hoss

Small town farm town bars in centeral ILL just moved to the back room to smoke. BIL liked his smokes and was in the ground at 50 with lung cancer that went to the brain. Nasty death Nasty. 5 bucks a pack did not slow down many.

I'm probably biased. My wife is allergic to tobacco smoke. That's why I quit 46 years ago this month.

Once after a meal at a banquet, a gentleman sitting next to my wife pulled out a big cigar and asked her if she minded if he smoked. She told him, "I don't mind if you smoke if you don't mind if I throw up on your plate".

He put the cigar away.

Came too late for me - lost a grandfather, brother, and probably gonna lose a sister, all to early deaths from lung cancer/emphasema.

I have no animosity toward smokers, but I believe the money saved on medicare costs is substantial when the number of smokers is reduced. I think the overriding plus is the health benefits to nonsmokers, especially kids.

Ct has been smoke free for a few years now.Taxes keep increasing on them and the Fed loves the fact that people are dying from it so it shortens up social security payments so my CPA says.

Vito

We have those laws past too.The only place you can smoke is in jail.We have one bar in town where you rent a ash tray and all the money goes in a kitty to pay for the fine if they get caught, but it is in a seperate area of the bar.

The ones that say it will hurt business are full of it, logically you figure that the smokers won't stay home long and the non smokers will go to these places so more customers and in real life that's how it worked.
I never could figure why places had smoking areas and let little kids in them.

You people who support these kinds of laws make me sick.
I quit smoking but just wait till it is your ox that is gored.
Wait till the nanny state takes all of the trans fats out of your foods.
Wait till they tell you which and how many trees you can cut down on your land like in NYC.
Wait till they tell you you can't go mudding or even drive your tractor in a wet area that you own.

Look at the zoning laws some cities have where your inlaws can't park the motorhome in your yard for even one night when they visit. Look at the building codes that are ever more restrictive even to the point of telling you you can't pick color of paint because it clashes.
And I'm Not talking about covenants in condos either.
Watch them mandate exorbatant insurance policies for gun owners.
Watch them mandate smog control on ALL internal combustion engines. Watch for cow fart taxes.
Watch for all kinds of onerous fees and taxes on things we take for granted today like pop that rots the teeth and barbeques which cause carcinogins, and any kind or 2 cycle engines.
You people who support these kins of liberty robbing bans have been hoodwinked into thinking we can make the world a safe place with enough warning stickers and bans.
You people who support these kinds of laws are unAmerican. You have lost your wits and are trading your liberty for safety and your freedom for convienence.
You are sheep being lead to a bad, bad place.
You people make me sick.
Just wait till the fat police come knocking at your door because your madated body fat index isn't low enough.
Just wait till your ox is gored!!

I usually do not get into these things but I feel I must throw this out. I am a smoker, have been for fifty years, that being said, I am not a fool! I know that smoking is a horrid addiction. Yes it is an addiction, worse than booze or pot and I have done my share of all of it. If there is anything better than a smoke with a beer or a cup of coffee
God kept it for himself. With this new price increase I am going to try my best to quit these damn things. I also like to go to nice resturants and I like a good meal. I always go to the smoking section, as of yet their is not a state wide ban in Missouri. Their is always empty tables in the smokers section and I have never seen it fail that non smoking parents will drag their screaming running out of control children in there, instead of waiting for a table. Just like you, I would like to eat a meal in a pleasant atmosphere. That is one beef, the biggest one I guess is if they can impose a tax and also regulate how you use this taxed substance what next, fries, burgers, cokes, as we all know too much of these are bad for you. All you non smokers think about that the next time you are wolfing down some pork rinds or a big mac, knocking it back with a Coke.

your comment about driving thru wet places and mud holes, raang a bell with me!
A farmer in central Pennsylvanis was put in jail because he filled in a low spot in one of his wheat fields, because it covered a half acre of good land near a creek! It only filled up when they had a hard rain, but dried out soon! I've seen that field, and it didn't seem to be a problem, since a large creek was at the outer edge of the field, but didn't flow near the wet spot!
your Govment at work!!

I wonder how many of you that praise the ban on smoking get all worked up when reminded of these guidelines for posting on this board.

I agree with you. Where does it stop? Scales at the Diary Queen ? We are a nation of obeseity. So you have a mother & kids in her car smoking on her way to Mickey D's get a heart attack in a box. Do we ticket her for smoking ? or setting a bad lifestyle for kids?? I am not saying smoking isn't bad for you. But would you stand in a garage with door closed with 10 people smoking or 1 car running. Your choice!!!!!!!
Now we need to look all these tractors belching black smoke.

Somehow...someway, politicians gave folks the idea that their Constitutional rights extended beyond the doorways of other foks private property and into their buildings and establishments, and folks bought into it. Shameful. What's mine is mine, and what's yours is mine.

I wouldn't have commented here, really wouldn't have, but after reading some of the other posts here condoning the idea of what's mine is mine, and what's yours is mine, cause after all, it takes a village, an inclusive village that you and everyone else will be part of, whether you like it or not...shameful. Just shameful. To think of the freedoms that our forefathers fought and died to give us, the freedoms that our men and women, soldiers fought and died to preserve, only to have folks, folks right here assume the attitude of what's mine is mine, and what's inside and beyond the entrance of your doorway is mine...shameful. Just shameful, without the least bit of self pride to stand on their own two feet, because it takes a group, a village to prop them up collectively. Shameful. Just shameful.

Whatever happened to my old friend here, TXBLUE, TXGREEN...Mark? Aint heard from that guy here in years. Was kind of one of those what's yours is yours, whats mine is mine, and if we want to share or do each other a favor kind of deals, is our business, and no one else's. Guess he, like others had their fill of the village environment. I'm gonna tell ya all something, like it or not, and I'm as serious as a heart attack and one of the nicest fellas you'll ever want to meet, and one of the meanest, and that depends on you, but your Constitutional rights which I fully support and will fight and die for if need be...end at my doorway though.

Mark

NY state has had no smoking in bars / resturants for years. I don'tsmoke, if the smoke bothered me I would not go in. Just another thing taken away. My 2 cents.

I agree Sid, but everything is not black and white. The folks that will ban smoking today will also prohibit starting a gasoline powered Farmall H someday. State of California wont let you have charcoal BBQ grills, emmission controls on your Briggs and Straton lawnmower engine, etc. What the Whacko's think up on the East and Left coast eventually works it way all over.

As Barney Fife said "You gotta nip it in the bud"

I can tie danged near any thing or topic back to tractors somehow.

I guess I don't get it, how is exhaling a known carcinogen into the air for others to be forced to breath considered a freedom? Its not, its just rude. You guys that smoke have to come up with a better argument because that one doesn't hold water. Smokers have no right in an enclosed public place to force others to breath that. Go out side so people don't have to put up with the stink.

You should know that making smoking illegal would not work, you have the precedent. The hip pocket and legislation is the only way to go, what a good idea.Banning smoking in cars is just saving a new generation.Somebody has to look after them, obviously the parents are not..

MN started a statewide ban a couple of years ago- in all public places, factories, etc. Biggest opposition came from bar and restaurant owners, as if they were the only ones affected. Some bars found the exception that allowed smoking in a theatrical performance- so they issued tags reading "actor", and let patrons smoke. That got shot down within a few weeks. Service clubs objected with the argument, I fought for this country, now they tell me I can"t smoke at the club. It"s as ridiculous as saying an underage drinker should be left off because he"s old enough to serve his country. I cannot remember giving up a few years of my life to serve so that I could smoke- I thought it was for a bigger reason. My only brother had 33 years in the Army, smoked, died a miserable death from emphysema a few years after retiring. Only about 20% of the population smokes, while 100% breathes. If you"re going to have a ban, then enforce it. Sure hasn"t killed any of my smoking friends when they go outside the bar for a puff. I enjoy patronizing the local bars, but don"t come home smelling like a chimney. Never any shortage of discourteous smokers who think it"s fun to blow smoke in another"s face.

I think you have it entirely backwards with your notion of rights.
Some people don't like the smell of horse manure.
So I would say they have a right to stay out of horse barns.
If you don't like the smell of smokey bars I would suggest you exercise your right to stay out of them.

Owner of the local bar and grill developed lung problems. (Imagine that) No smoking allowed until further notice for health reasons. Not only have they kept all the local thirsty people, they are doing a booming grillin business because whole families are now coming in for the eats whereas only the most "thirsty" would put up with each other before.
To me its no different than if I came in with my tall boots covered in fresh pig shtuff. It'll stink to high heaven and leave an odor that will linger for hours. I wouldn't think of doing that to somebody in a public place so I don't know why they want to do it to me with their cancer sticks. Its a common sense and a consideration for others issue as I see it.
