Favorite tractor(s)? WHY? Old topic??

Don't know if this has been thrown about, but I enjoy knowing about peoples likes and dislikes.

What is (or has been) your favorite tractor to work on or operate? Is it because of Hydraulics, 3 point, ease of operation, sentimentality, dependability, or anything else that makes that machine #1 in your eyes?

Even though I was raised with JD, Farmall, and a 2N, The 2N is still #1 for me. It has worked about every day since 1953. It's gone through 2 rebuilds, and even though it has no power steering, hydraulics, or live PTO it was the tractor I first drove and grew up on, and can pretty much do what was asked of it. Yeah, it's all sentimental, cause after it I'll never part with the family 46 John Deere A or dad's W-6. How about you?

My dad's 48 JD A. Mainly because it was my dad's. Its also the first tractor I ever drove, has easier power steering than my Chevy truck, and never fails to start.

After that, its any of the other JDs we have (70's, B's an M and an MT).

I like the old JD 6030 for raw, brute power (but little else, and probably no one else will vote for it! ha)...

I like the 895 Versatile 4-wheel drive for dependability and ease to work on and how much work it could get done (46' disk, 50' sweep)...

I like the G-1000 Vista Minnie for looks.

And the old Case Crossmotors for being very interesting historically.

It was the Oliver 77 until I bought my first Oliver 1850.
The Oliver 77 was the first new tractor that I was able to work in the fields. Easy to drive and easy on my rear end than what we had before.

The Oliver 1850 just sounded good when you was working it hard in the field and was an easy ride as well. Not that I didn't like the Oliver 1650 I was using before the Oliver 1850.

I liked the ones I grew up on.

Farmall 660 wheatland diesel. poor visibility with those big feners and long hood, I had to stand up to see anything nearby. bad power steering and took 40 acres to turn aroung but I still liked disking with it.

Farmall 806 diesel with a turbo. Our big tractor. I liked the sound of the turbo and straight pipe.

Case DC. They look primitive as all get out with the side arm steering but but the first tractor I drove was a DC. I have both the DC"s we had when I was growing up.

First tractor I ever drove was my grandfathers John Deere 70 I was about 8 years old and the seat seemed to be a mile high I was out in a hay feild so I didnt do too much damage squished a couple of haybales turning the rig around at the end of the rows nothing serious. My current favorit is my oliver 1655 with a loadertakes me back in time every time I fire it up she's a big green time machine

JD 2510 good all around chore tractor and for cultivating. JD 6030 for power but not comfort should have had a sound guard cab on it. JD 4450 for all around tractor and had best comfort for tractor of its day. MF 135 good mowing tractor.

I dont know if 1982 is to new for this site, but my Ford 4610 had been a very good tractor. Never had any mojor problems with it, also the 3cylinder diesel is really good on fuel. Power steering, 3pt and 8x2 tranny. Only problem since we got it in 1990 was a cracked power steering line, from the vibration I suppose, I took it of re flared it and its been fine ever since.

Take a look at Nancy's 48A.

our MF 2805 had over 7800 hrs and not one day of down time. we bought it from a guy with 200 and some hrs that had all kinds of trouble with it but we never spent a dime on it other then normal maintenance. we also new how to shift it witch was a big thing. loved the sound of that V8. lost it in a shed fire in 88

I love my old Cockshutt 40 , good power, live pto that works great, high seat position, I use it with my 24T JD baler all summer and they make a great combo, plus the snappy governor on the old Buda engine really works nice and the old Buda 6 cylinder sounds great under load.

Dang James!
My father uses the same workin clothes! Thought it was him the minute I saw the straw hat! Nice looking "A"

Guess maybe a D15 AC that I baled with when working for my neighbor each summer as a kid. This was '62 to '65, so tractor wasn't far from new. My first experience with "live" PTO- still remember riding the foot brake as you let the foot clutch out, get the baler up to speed, then push that Power Director lever forward and away you go. Very smooth running tractor, liked the two speed "shift on the go" feature.

Then came to work one day, and there's a brand spankin' new Oliver 550 diesel with Freeman loader. Instantly, a new favorite tractor! Loved the diesel sound, smell, everything about it. And the neatest thing about it, they traded that miserable knee-bustin' JD 40 in on it!

Bought a 550 of my own in '78, will probably have it til I die.

The first new tractor I ever bought,my 1964 AC D17 gas was my favorite tractor I ever owned.I also bought a new AC 190 gas in 1965 but the D17 was always my favorite. I had two WD 45"s and an old WD,the D17 and the 190 and a MM Z when I sold out in 1971.

I learned to drive a JD 40 raking hay. It was 1968. I'm still raking hay with that JD. It's a '54. Someday it'll be all cleaned up and sitting pretty!!

My favorite is the 1930 C Case that my grandfather bought new 17 years before I came along. I've been around it all my life. Back around 1970 a second cousin made noises about buying it to go with the one he and his brother own that came in on the same truckload as mine. I told granddad not to sell it because I wanted it and he listened. I had the valves ground in 1973, put rings in in 1991, and got it painted in 1997. I can always depend on it to start on the 3rd or 4th pull on the crank.

My dad and I got started repainting the family JD A that was bought new in 46 after talking about doing it for the last 20 years. This is the tractor that taught me eye-hand coordination cutting with a 7' bar at 15

756 Int. In my opinion the best tractor and engine that Int ever made. Not to many 76 HP tractors could pull 5 16s". Given it was slow, 3rd gear but it would do it.Now it putts around 15 acres in Maine will have it till I die. ED

A 57 Case 400 Diesel, Sure ,it is sentimental as I spent a lot of time under that mounted umbrella cultivating on that smooth running old case. It had strong hydraulics, power steering, foot throttle, 8 forward speeds and a nifty little ball bearing spinner on the steering wheel. That dependable 400 Case still shares a shed with many others to this day but she is still my favorite.

1951 John Deere G...my grandfather had one in Ill when I was growing up...he had a dairy farm 140 acres..used to help him in the sommer,,,always wanted a G ...took me 40 plus years BUT I do have a 51 G!! Charles

In the 90's I did about 3000hrs in a Case 4894. Great to operate, very smooth controls espcially the 3PL. Did everything I asked, with no breakdowns.

My personal favorite is my 1950 Oliver with the 4-53 Detroit, mfd and a loader. It was the first tractor I bought when I started farming with my dad. I have replaced the brakes, clutch, one front axle shaft, hyd lines here and there, it is LOUD with the 5in chrome pipe on it, but it is the one tractor that will stay on the farm as long as I can have anything to do with it. Did I say it is LOUD? For a modern, working tractor my favorite is a JD 4455 with mfd- enough power for most jobs, dual PTO makes it more versetile, nice cab-or a JD7810 mfd with the 20 speed power quad and LH reverser and 740 loader.
