Caked Dirt and grime

I got a hay rake that has more dirt,dried grease etc caked on it.Anyone have a good concoction to help break this stuff down? I literally have to chisel this crap off.

Vito, I have had pretty decent luck with cheap dollar store oven cleaner.

Scrubbing bubbles will also work. Leave it on for a few hours. repeat. JimN

I'll second the oven cleaner. Just be careful where you spary it, it'll take paint off too!

A good sharp putty knife will take most of it off.

An air tool called a "needle scaler" also works good, if there's a lot of it. My Hudson had about a half inch of dried grease and road grime built up around each grease fitting (well, at least the guy had greased it). The scaler made pretty quick work of it.

Exactly. Always start by scraping away as much as possible.

A hot pressure washer (usually a rental item -- they're quite costly and not many folks have one of their own) is an amazing thing. Basically a diesel fired burner with a blower and pump. I've used one twice to clean up basket-case tractors before starting on them. Truly impressive and efficient at cutting, lifting and blasting away everything right down to loose paint.

If the rental cost is excessive for cleaning up just your rake (probably so), I'd line up anything else I've got that could use a cleaning the night before, and do them all at the same time.

I've tried all suggestions written below with various degrees of success. They all take a lot of time and effort. ScottyHOMEy below is absolutely correct. Get a steam pressure washer. Rent one, hire a guy with one or buy one. It's absolutely amazing what they will do. I've spend days cleaning a tractor ready for paint. The steam pressure washer will do the same job in hours. Sure they are expensive but you don't have to use them a lot to pay for themselves. What's your time worth?
