GMC Power window

On my 2000 GMC 1500 the power window works when it feels like it, not when I need it to. Sometimes it works fine , then not at all. Replaced the track about a year ago, but wonder if it could be the switch. Anyone else have trouble with your GM power windows?

Replace both switches, one is acting up and imposible to tell which one. Been there done that however did only one at a time and nothing but headaches.

I'd lean toward the motor. They can be intermittent sometimes.

Could be the switch. Usually when a wire in the door jamb is broken, it's broken, period.

That being said, I just fixed some wires for power windows and door locks in an '85 Chevy pickup, and I found it easier to access the wires (and fix them properly)in the door jamb by removing the fender and working from the front.

My 99 GMC van did the same thing,I think the 2000 used the same motor. very intermitent. I replaced the motor, and everything works. There is a lot of difference in price of the motors. I found one for around 20.00 from the autoparts wearhouse on line, or check ebay unless you go to the dealer, they all come form china. They are easy to change. I think there is a access where you don't need to take off the hole door padding. Just knock out the rivets, and use selftapping screws to install the motor. Stan

we change quite a few of the motors. napa has a decent motor at a good price compared to an oem unit. you can either bolt the new motor in, or rivet it in. on some of the regulators, you need to put a stop bolt in before removing the motor, cause that spring can snap the regulator like a mouse trap. read the instructions that come with the replacement motor, if they say put the bolt in, do so!!

I agree w/Unclemerle down below. Same thing on my '88 chevy p/u. Replaced both switches and good to go. For couriosity's sake I tore them apart to see what made them tick (or not) and found a good bit of corrosion. TDF

I have to fix many olders ones from the 80s and 90s. With most, I had to pull the motors apart and clean up the commutators. The get moisture in them, get slow as time goes on. Especially with trucks left parked out in the weather. I've never had to replace one - just tear it apart, clean, and put back together. Obviously, you might also have switch problem, but that is easy to check.

When it isn't working, hold the switch down and hit the door sharply with a rubber mallet. If it starts working, it's the motor for sure. Also move the door open and closed while holding the switch. If it works at one point, but not another, it's broken wires in the accordion joint at the door jamb. Just a couple of easy tricks I learned over the years. HTH
Good Luck and God Bless.

Careful with the motors. I had one fail, and found that the field magnets were made from compressed ferrite. Was broken. Cleaned it up as best I could, glued the largest piece back in the housing, worked until we sold the vehicle at 260,000 miles.
