Rain and mild weather brought early grass and spring calving cows are selling good in my neck of the woods. I think Farmers and Stockmen are by nature more optimistic than the average urban dweller.

Colored fats are kind of weak. I got $81 for some nice fat steers 2 weeks ago. Last week I got $73.50-$76. Didn't take any this week, but the website says they topped at 79.50.

rrlund - do you raise everything you feed or do you buy your supplement or grind alfalfa? For tax purposes can you charge yourself what the elevator would pay you for your corn or just deduct the cost of inputs, depreciation etc. not meaning to be nosy -- just curious.

You can deduct the cost of growing the feed.

If you deduct the cost the elevator would charge for the corn then you have to show the income on the corn you raised.

Ends up the same either way for total income and total expenses.

Sooo just deduct the cost of growing the feed.

Easier book work that way.

Yea,everything Gary said. I feed everything that I grow. Try to keep just enough cattle around to keep things balanced.
