78,500 unusal for brakes on F250?

Service Dept mentioned I am starting to need brakes on my 04 F250 - they were surprised that the pads had never been replaced and they were still good, worn but good at 78,500 miles. Is that so unusal? I usually get 75,000 to 100,000 out of brakes and tires.....or am I just being too cheap?

My 1994 Chevy K-1500 has almost 220K miles with ONE change of front pads and the rear shoes are original.

Of course, I've never let my teenage sons drive it!

That may be one reason I did not get more mileage, wife drives the truck on occasion. When I am the passenger I keep reminding her she is not driving her Saturn, to back off more and control distance and speed with throttle. She loves to come up behind people and then hit the brakes, keep telling her alot more weight, one day she wont stop in time.

I have a 1998 Dodge 3500 diesel w/5speed manual. I do a lot of towing and get 60k-70k per set of front brakes. I now have over 200k on the truck.

The service dept. told me that most 2500-3500"s w/auto"s get about 30k-40k on front brakes.
Your driving style will make a BIG differnce on how long they last.

1993 D350 Dodge w/5-speed and Cummins; got almost 100,000 on first set of front pads, can't remember how much longer the rear lasted.... this is a work truck, pulled lots of loads.

It depends on the quality of the tires and brakes. Plus your driving style.

Wife is on her 2nd set of tires and brakes on the Caravan.

I have never had to change tires and brakes a secound time on any of my vehicles so dont really know. I think my F250 115,000 on the 1st set I replaced last summer. But dont know if they were the original sets or not.

My 92 f150 4wheel drive had 105000 mi when the mechanic said front brakes will probably need replacing next visit, do you want me to do them now? Yes I said. Rear break shoes were replaced around 120000 due to cracks in the shoe, Plenty of shoe left though. I don't brake hard, slow down before having to brake.

Well... If You do alot of Highway driving, and are an "Easy driver" Yes, I put about 100K on a Toyota before needing Replacements, albeit it is a Lighter vehicle, But good for Comparrison purposes.. Larry KF4LKU

Driving it loaded or empty most of the time makes a huge differance in the life of brakes and tires.
