Poor running Kubota, m75000dt

It has 6500 hrs, and a head rebuild was done 2000 hrs ago. Oil and all filters are changed religiously. At high rpm, it backfires, farts, and skips, but not always. Occasionally much noise accompanies a start, even when warm. Dealer says "bad fuel, bad fuel" but everything else runs fine. And numerous fuel deliveries have occured. We're having injectors tested later this week and doing a compression test. Will also check valve clearance. Anyone have any other suggestions, this has been happening for several Summers now and is getting worse.

Have you checked inj pump timing? I had a 3000 Ford diesel that would backfire when it was first started. I put several doses of fuel conditioner in it and it quit backfiring.

At 4500 hrs, several of the valves were leaking, causing low compression. The cause was never explained. They were always kept in proper adjustment.
