Power for a mower deck?

Hi, I thought I would ask opinions for some of you who may have tried this. I have a 60" Kubota deck I want to mount under my MH pony. I am debating whether I should mount an 11HP engine on the deck to power it, or connect to the pto? I know on the pto I need an over-run clutch, but I wonder if I have enough power? Has anyone used a cub with a wood L59? How did it work?

Thanks for any input.

I've used a Cub with a 5-foot belly mower as my primary lawnmower (about 1.5-2 acres) for several years. No problems with power unless the grass is quite tall, in which case I either have to raise the mower or take half a pass. I usually mow in second gear, though in hilly ground first would be more appropriate. There are thousands of Cubs out there with belly mowers--it was (and still is) one of the most popular uses for a Cub--and though of course more power would definitely be an improvement, provided you use common sense a Cub is a perfectly adequate 5-foot mowing tractor.

An L59 is almost a 6ft mower. We had one on a Farmall A tractor and it's all it wanted at times. The blades really have to spin to do a good job.

I think the proper size belly mower for a cub is 4'. I bought a '59 cub with a 5' mower on it and I thought it was too much mower. But your Pony is a little bigger than a cub. I would try it before I mounted a separate engine on it. rw

Done just exactly that and have used it for at least 10 years on 2 1/2 acres.
Only I call mine a Farmall Kub (ota).
Went in thru the crank hole with a shaft and a lovejoy coupling machined into the front pully and created a live PTO off the front with the OE Kubota double belt tightener. (Clutch)
The pullys were something like 5 1/2 and a 6 and swapped them to get a slight overdrive.
Still works best to run the mower right up there around 2000 rpm but usually only run the farmall around 1450 whatever that works out to.
I like the nice job it does on the (would be) lawn.
Farmall has coupla HP more than stock and works ok except mebbe first cuttin', er mowin', can dump the clutch and let the mower catch up.
Also rigged it to the hyd lift to raise. My property is divided with a small crick. (Creek)
Used those funky arms to mount it on a subframe, in order to keep it straight for the pto shaft.

Dad has had a Woods 59 on an 18 horse B Farmall for 35 years and it's a very dependable rig but if the grass is tall the little Farmall needs a little kick in the butt.Jim
