OT S10 rear axle

A friend just got a 95 S 10 Chevy and every time the truck shifts (automatic) it rotates the rear axle on the springs till you hear a clunk, both forward and reverse. What do you think would be the cause of that? We both had other S 10's and never had that problem. Broken spring? Bad shock?

if the housing is rotating on the springs the axel locating pads are broke off ,,,,not likely ,( the U bolt clamp force actually dents the housing) could also be a broke housing , possible but not likely , most likely is the ring & pinion are wore , and when you put it in gear you are getting a clunk, could also be a U joint....Shawn

Are you sure the rear axle is moving,?Get up the back and check all the fittings, but I would suggest your auto needs an overhaul.

Yes, I am sure the axle is twisting as I have watched as he was puting it thru the gears, it twists as far as the distance for the heavy lower spring to hit the rest.

It is not uncommon for the spring to "load" as the car is put in gear , but the clunk is probably a U joint.....you are going to have to lift the vehicle up on a hoist or jack-stands and look at everything really good. If it has been dry a while , you may even notice rust dust from the surrounding surfaces that are rotating. you could also have a broken springs , but only a leaf or two from the sounds of it ....check the u joints first tho ...if it is making a loud clunk it probably isn't far from letting you know exactly what is wrong.....hope it won't be too long a walk to the house......Shawn

He is driving it on a rual newspaper route the same as I am doing with a 94 Olds Ceira with 244,000 mile. My route is about 140 mile while his is about 110 mile 6 days a week. Would the rear end from a 94 S 10 fit in the 95? He has a 94 that just got wrecked when the brake line broke and got this truck that had the front end damaged but he got a different front end on it. The 94 got the frame bent.
