OT/ Bad tire wear on '93 F250

There is a cupped out place on the front left tire. Right tire is wearing even. What's it out of line, unbalanced er what?(or both)
It'a FWD. As long as the tire size is the same, can different tread styles be used on the front than on the rear?-

You need to check all the front components tierod ends, ball joints and such, then get a good alignment.
Assuming the front tires have been ballanced.

On a 4x4 tires need to be rotated often. I rotate mine on my 4x4"s at every oil change. 3,000 - 5,000 miles depending on witch truck.

Its a shock/ballance issue.

I gotta admit, I haven't rotated them for a long time or had them balanced either. I haven't had any vibration, but a lot of "whine" but they have a pretty aggressive tread so I figured that was what made them noisy. But along one side of the side wall right where the cupping is the worst, it looks like the side wall is bulging just a bit. Guess I'll rotate them , get them balanced and go from there. Thanks to all.

If that feathering is bad enough that you can feel it when you run your hand along the edge, it's already too late. It will never correct itself.

Might be time fer new tires?

I had one of those old trucks when they were new and had the same problem. They never could find a problem just told me to rotate more often.

When driving if you feel a wobble or vibration under 45 mph it's the tire.
Balance of the tire kicks in at 45mph and any speed above that. This will tell you if it's the tire or a balance problem.

Check the front ball joints for wear. A worn ball joint can cause strange uneven wear with no noticeable impact on handling. Changing them on a 4WD front axle is a pain, but doable. I have a 99, and the factory ball joints had no grease fittings, so when they start wearing they go pretty fast.

Lightly worn spots at centre of tread.

a. static balance of wheel and tyre assembly
b. radial runout [eccentricity] of wheel

Flat spots at centre of tread.

a. Eccentric brake drum
b.repeatedly severe brake application
c. lack of tyre rotation.

Spotty or irregular wear.

a. static or dynamic unbalance of wheel and tyre assembly
b.lateral runout of wheel
c.excessive play in wheel hub bearing.
d.excessive play in steering knuckle ball joints.

Balance issue. Could be a broken belt...

Other than toe, there's really no worries about alignment on those things. If it's got leafs in the front, I don't beleive there's anything to change other than toe... and if it's got the twin I-beam the geometry changes constantly with load, so adjustments are only somewhat relevant to what it's hauling at the time of alignment. Twas a miserable system to keep tires on.

Sounds like a bad bearing I would have it checked out at a very good front end shop. It could lots of little things that all add up to the wear but on tire its usually bearing wear that causes cupping.

Put your spare up there first. Might solve all problems. Cheapest thing to happen. You say front wheel drive, but you mean 4 wheel drive. Next if still problems, get a measuring tape and check toe in toe out situation, maybe you bend tie rod in your off road riding. Unbalanced wheel jumpin g up and down will do this too and all what others have suggested. Dave

Bulging sidewall???

Broken belt. Get the tire off before it blows on you. It will eventually.
