Pearl Guineas

Anyone ever raise pearl guineas? I was thinking of getting 25 as day old chicks.

Is there anything different I would have to do, other than what I do with the ducks and geese every year?

Can I mix them with the ducks/geese as chicks?

Thanks,
Rick

We have 4 (started out with 6).

They're really easy to bring up. Make sure you keep them warm (but not to warm!) and out of harms way. They grow quickly so be prepared to give them space as they need it. We used turkey starter until they got bigger then switched to just a regular turkey pellet. I also keep some scratch around to throw it out side for them, they really like it during the winter.

I also wouldn't let them out until they're at least 8 weeks old. They're not the brightest birds around and tend to put them selves is situations that aren't always great (mine like to try to stop cars although none have been hit).

Right now we've got them more or less trained to go inside at night. It took them a while to figure out that at night being inside was a good thing...that's how we lost 2.

They're fun and don't require much work to keep them happy.

You do know they're really loud right?

(quoted from post at 14:12:23 02/23/09) For starters, you'll need a top on your brooder box! How do you feel about constant noise?

That's true. I built a cover for mine using hardware cloth. I'm not sure when they can really "fly" but it seemed like they weren't very old, that and the little buggers are fast too!

They're not chickens, that's for sure.

You will never find a better security system. Anything strange comes in the area and do they make the noise, especially at night.

Thanks for the info. With the geese, I already have tons of noise.

I didn't realize they could hop out of the brooder so easy. I can screen the top.

I guess I'll get them then.

Thanks,
Rick
