Perkins 4.236 advice

Still working on the MF 175 rebuild. Stopped by the machine shop to check out the progress on the machine work. The head had been cleaned but not surfaced. The tech showed me there were "rings" worn into the cylider head surface from the sleeves. They weren't too deep, the resurfacing will take care of it. What causes this? It was only on two cylinders, almost like the sleeves were moving up and down and beating on the head. How can I make sure it doesn't happen again? The engine was very worn, you could move the pistons in the cylinders side to side with a finger. It was running before I took it apart, beleive it or not! Thank y'all for the help.

I believe sleeves should stick up a few ths. above the block. This is for a good seal between the sleeve, and the gasket. There is a chance the sleeves didn't have this area above the block. If this were a wet sleeve engine you probably would have had water in the oil. There may be shims to take care of this problem. Before the day is done you should have some good answers to your problem, and corrective action. stan

This is a common problem on some 236 perkins and yes the sleeves did go up and down I took mine to a machine shop and if i remember right they used a newer sleeve design and machined a step in the block to hold the new sleeve
