Freeze plug replacement

My Allis "C" needs the cup type freeze plugs in the head replaced. Easy to get to. Any tips for removal, install, or sealing? Thanks! John

I take a punch and hammer and pound it in on one edge and it will rotate in the hole. Then I use a vise grips and deform it enough to pull out of the hole. I would smear a little RTV silicone in around the plug and the hole and use a pipe or a dowel the right diameter and pound the new one in.

Once you got the new freeze plug started in the hole hit it in the very middle so it will expand and tighten in the hole. Then smear somr RTV around the out side along the edges. This procedure is for the freeze plugs that are convex in shape and this is how you install this type.

Some freeze plugs are bowl shaped and you just drive them in and put some sealer on the outside.

Some will argue that any type of sealer is not necessary, which they are right but a little RTV goes a long whay when a hard to get to plug starts to leak after installation.

A tiny bit of Loctite slathered around the periphery of the hole before putting the plug in place will guarantee no leaks, and is a LOT less messy and visible than slopping silicon on the OUTSIDE of the plug.
