LOW hour tractor coming up for auction.

I was glancing thru the auctions coming up in my IL AgriNews paper. Sullivan's over to Hamilton, IL has a estate auction with a 82 JD 4440 with 47 hours, another with 692 hrs, a third with 1843 hrs. The JD 7720 combine has 477 hrs. 82 GMC tandem dsl twin screw grain truck has 4008 miles. JD 2600 5 bottom plow still brand new, never been used.
I hate to think what this stuff is going to bring. Bet it sells for more than it was new. DOUG

Yeah....that stuff will bring more than new probobaly....but remember....sitting is harder than running....at least most of the time....it depends on the operator....but 47 hrs in 26 years???? good greif....That could be interesting.....

Sale bill claims stuff has been "stored properly and started regularly". Even so, I would be leary of stuff like seals and gaskets being dry. DOUG

Yeah....its gonna be dry seal city...In my opinion....that 47 hr 4440 would have ran 9 minuates a month for the last 26 yrs...(47/26/12=9 minuates) I guess that might be long enough to warm the motor up.....WHY HAS THIS STUFF NOT BEEN USED??? Is the question I ask....

Sounds like the 1967 Oliver 1550 that Sherry Schaefer bought last fall out of an old barn in New York state. Had 69.7 hours. Calls it her N.O.S. Oliver.

What"d he do, farm 80 acres a year with this stuff? Obviously not the 47 hour 4440, but the hours on the combine and stuff are in line with less than 100 acres/yr. Or did he quit in the late 80"s? This is really interesting,.

.....WHY HAS THIS STUFF NOT BEEN USED??? Is the question I ask....

well I know nothing about this particular situation but I know of farmers around me that found "sudden oil lease money" went out and bought extravagantly for the farm and never or seldom used the stuff and it sat and rotted. tractors, cars, trucks, you name it. Some of them used it for things they needed of course like buildings etc but many p'ed it off.

The sale bill does indeed say ESTATE AUCTION. There is also a LOT of antique equipment on the bill, the top of the sale bill says: The "Wayne Crooks Collection". It does leave a lot of questions as to why and how. DOUG

Doug, You're down by Macomb aren't you? (I'm near Peoria - just east of billonthefarm) Can you post a date for that sale - might be interesting.

Jim

I'd look for other indications of wear; condition of tires, wear on pedals, 'slop' in linkages, etc. We......typically........got about 5-6000 hours on a hour meter before it failed.

If I had the money, I wouldn't be leery of anything. I would buy it and use it and fix everything that leaked as I could. Who wouldn't like to have a "new" old tractor. They don't build them like that anymore.

i know of a jd 4430 thats only got 17 hrs on it , wa
n s ordered new with narrow front
ihave a 68 modell farmall 656 gas that only has 1150 hrs org tires org air in rear tires

OK, you have figured out about where I live. I am just west of Tennessee.
Regarding the sale, it is a two day, March 5 and 6. Household stuff 5th, farm 6th. 9 AM both days.
They do have a website: www.sullivanauctioneers.com

DO THEY HAVE A LAW ABOUT TURNING THE HOUR METER BACK LIKE THEY DO ON AUTO'S FOR THE ODOMETER,
(I would have to bet they do)
Looks to me like Low Hour Tractor Scams are getting more popular...

WOW,,,that sounds perty cool,,,,dont happen to have a web site for that would ya,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,not interested,,,,,,just fun to look at,,

I wouldn't think the tach's have been turned back. Stuff like this shows up occasionally around here (NW Ohio) as well. I think some fellows around here had a fantastic 10 yrs of farming (from about '65-'75) and made alot of money. They bought alot of new equipment, then when s**t hit the fan in the 80's they quit farming everything but the families' 80. They didn't owe anyone money and in the late 80's and early 90's they quit all together and rented the farm out to the neighbor and their machinery just sat in the shed. The tenant farmer would come by a couple times a year, start everything up and maybe used the 4440 to pull their straight truck out of the soft corn stalks one year when harvest got late because it was close. About a year ago a local auctioneer had a sale with a bunch of super low hr JD stuff. A 4020D powershift with like 900 hrs or something, a 7800 or 7810 with like 300, and a 9400 combine, I think, with like 400 eng hrs and like 250 separator hrs. I don't remember what everything brought, but I do remember the 4020 bringing in the 30's. I hope it was bought by a collector. I don't think spending that much on a 30 or 40 year old tractor that you intend to use everyday is very smart. For the same money you could probably get a 5 yr old machine of comparable size with fairly low hrs as well. I don't totally buy into the "old stuff is made better than the new stuff" theory. At least not as far as farm machinery is concerned.

My dad's got a 1979 Ford pickup with around only 50,000 actual miles on it. It was always broke down so finally got put in the junk line. I think the only original part of the "drive train" that hasn't been fixed or repaired is the transfer case. Engine was wore out at 25,000 miles, transmission had major problems as did the front end and rear end. I think the lemon law might have applied to this vehicle. No, it did not get very hard use either!! I would like to see this farm sale. I would think it would be easy enough to see if there is something "fishy" going on at the sale It is probably an honest sale as there are people out there that have equipment that very seldom ever moves.

i guess that's all well and good but a tractor with 47 hrs is still "new" once you start using it you can't go back. Kinda like finding some rare piece "still in the crate" Whatcha gonna do with it, Take it out of the crate?

well I said I would USE it. I am pretty sure it would outlast another like it with 10,000 hours on it, DRY SEALS OR NOT. I know it wouldn't be new forever but I have a knack for making things last through manitaining them. Buy a 10,000 hr one, who knows what knacks the previous owner(s) had??? have you ever visited a farm and left feeling bad for the guys equipment? I HAVE.

Was this equipment shedded? I went to a sale where a 7040 had about 2500 hours on it which compared to mine with 3000 hours. But no way would I trade after seeing condition of the AC. It apparently never seen the inside of a shed and had racoon feces inside cab. One of the keys would be whether these items were kept out of the elements.

Machinery Pete was talking about this on agriculture.com Apparently he has a show, or a part of a show on RFD-TV, he was going to try to film part of the auction to show on there. He made a comment that the auctioneer said the newest of the tractors still had a little new tractor smell.
w/ 47 hours, you almost wonder if the motor's even broken in?

The guy bought 3 new tractors, a new combine, and a new tandem, all in the same year. Must have had a windfall in "82!
