What kinda new truck to buy

This is kinda off subject but I was kinda thinin about a new truck. I have owned all of the big three. Dodge,Ford,And Chevy and had some luck with them all. I will be buying a 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel. I'm thinking of going Ford on the simple fack that they didn't need bailed out. Kinda seems like the right thing to do. Just wanted to see what the throught was?

I'd buy a Ford if it was me. If for no other reason than I hear the only new truck that you can buy with a standard transmission is a Ford. I'll never have another farm truck with an automatic if I can help it.

That is good reasoning on Ford not asking for a bailout. yet !
But the best engine so far is the inline Cummins. But Dodge is to be going to a V8 and that will likely be trouble ?

Then there may soon be another option on a diesel as Toyota is to be bringing one out. If it is like their other products (especially the older ones) it will be most reliable.

We might need to do some more checking on that, I had heard the only big 3 diesel available with a standard tranny was Dodge with the 6 speed.

I just did a search on the website of a local Dodge dealership. The 2009 3500 (1 ton dually) comes with a manual tranny.

I will never own another p/u with an automatic tranny.

The simple solution is to try out all three brands and then decide on the one you want. All three brands make good stuff.

I have heard the way to get the best deal is to decide what truck you want and then get an internet price from various dealerships. It doesn't matter if they have the truck you want in stock because they can get it if they don't have it.

I'm a Ford man myself. Friend just bought a '09 Ford Diesel. Darned nice truck. Wouldn't wanna have to work on it though. Under the hood looks like a rats nest. Heard the cab has to be pulled off to do any serious wrenching on the Engine. He got the 7 yr warranty, and after lookin at the mess under the hood, I see why! Nice piece of equipment though.

I don't know. That's just what I'd heard. I guess if they do away with new standards all together,I'll never buy new.

Im a ford man myself, but for the farm we are on our 3rd Dodge Diesel. Current one is a 07. I haul alot of cattle to packerlnd with it it has the 6 speed auto in it and would hate to go back to the manual. We joke that we bought a cummins engine and they threw the dodge in with it!!
If it were to replace my half ton i would def get a ford again. Alot of it is preference, go to a sale barn and most pickups puling trailers are fords, followed closely by dodge. Chevy diesels are few and far between.

The duramax has the best engine and tranny. Ford doesn't have a good diesel, and dodge has a good diesel, but no truck or tranny.

Toyota still doesn't have anything bigger than a 1/2 ton. Pretty hard to find one with a regular cab too, but I guess the same goes for most trucks these days.

Im studying on new vehicles myself. Im inclined to wait and see what Toyota brings out. Best vehilces I've ever had have been Japanese diesels, followed closely by German diesels. I'm driving a D2500 Dodge diesel right now. Its been an ok truck but I had to do a LOT of engine work at 160,000. Thats just not enough durability for me and what the Cummins cost extra.

Wow, what a civilized thread! Nobody's bashin' anything. Let's keep it goin'!

I always said if I could have a Cummins pushin' an Allison in a Ford, that'd be the truck for me.

I chickened out on the Allison and Ford was in the middle of their 6.0 woes at the time I was buyin', so I wound up with an '03 Ram 3500, HO CUmmins (there were three variants available that year)long cab and bed, 4WD, NV5600 (I guess the newer six speed is a Getrag), 3.73 single rear and added an exhaust brake not long after I got it.

135k so far, about 60k of it towing, and I can't complain too much about the repairs, though I might feel differently if I hadn't bought the extended 100k warranty. No issues with the Cummins at all so far. U-joint on the left front axle started clickin' at 35k. They destroyed the hub/bearing unit while replacing it, so I got a new one that's still going fine. RF U-joint started failin' not long later. They saved the hub/bearing that time, but it gave out just out of warranty. Only other has been U joints in the rear driveshaft. First time was under warranty and they replaced the whole danged shaft. Middle u-joint in that went bad just a short while ago. I've got a greasable one back in its place. Don't know, but I've gotta feelin' the exhaust brake might be a little harder on u-joints??? But it's well worth havin'.

I know there's sites for Dodge and Ford diesel owners and I'm sure Chevy must have one, too.

You might want to take a look around them to see what the current owner's complaints are about the new ones.

I've had all three and the best luck I had was with the Fords. I have a 2004 Dodge one ton now and I bought it because of the Cummins. It now has 106,000 and has been worked since new pulling trailers gross wieght 18,000 to 22,000 with towing miles being about 2/3 of total miles. I'm not hard on my equipment and I'm big on making sure service and PM is done. I've had to replace all the ujoints, also left frt axle joint and right now need to replace the right frt axle joint and right lower ball joint. Friends of mine with fords haven't had these problems but have had problems with glow plugs. Can't say much about Chevy, not many around here.

My son just read the other day That people putting chips in there chevys are blowing there allison transmissions . They have been putting rebilt dodge transmisions with heavy duty updates in there chevys and not having problems. I guess the allisons are bilt for the duramax at factory HP but not for higher Hp chips. I will say I have a 1997 dodge with cummins and a 5 speed 170000 miles . The company replaced the engine at 234 miles the transmision at 70000 bad syncro rear axel seals, both driveshafts, Radio, wiper motor all under warranty since 100000 Miles. I slid fuel plate ahead get better milage and more power have not spent a dime in repairs .

You can do exactly what you said, Cummins turning an Allison, in a Ford. Think the website is destroked.com. My mechanic has that very setup in his pickup. Pretty sweet.

I never could understand a truck with a "shiftless" transmission. For crying out loud, learn to move the left leg and right hand at the same time. I'm not into diesels but Ford is the ONLY way I'd go.

Ford dosent have a good diesel? My 2000 Ford F250 with the powerstroke 7.3 has been fine for me. Bought it with 80,000 now has 134,000, pulls a 2 ton trailer 5 days a week. All it ever needed was, batterys a altnator and a water pump. I am really happy with it. It is a superduty so it has heavy suspension and a straight front axle, and floating rear axle.

I have all 3 as well 3/4 ton or 1 ton diesels, To date I have had satisfaction with all. The Ford 7.3 diesel was the best, The 6.0 Ford now has been good I am on 3rd one now you just have to know it needs power chip to get any mileage, Duramaxs I have mainly only driven for job were good trucks, I only ever had trouble with the fuel filters on them.

If you buy a Ford, get the Ultra Premium Triple Platinum Extended Covers Everything warranty. My buddies at the Ford dealer I used to work for say to do anything more than change oil and filters, you pull the cab. Radiators seem to be the most common problem now. The 6.4 is supposed to be a little better than the 6.0 for reliability. They copied the high pressure common rail fuel system from GM.
Most trouble free diesel? It's a tossup between GM and Cummins. The Allison trans is bullet proof in light trucks. It was made for medium duty applications.

Ford seems to be about the best financing now too. Dad just bought an 09, no trade (kept his old '94 for parts), they gave him $1000 "loyalty" payment because the '94 was a Ford, 0% financing for 5 years, practically no down payment. He had actually been looking at 2-3 year old trucks but with the 0% financing the new one will end up costing less overall over the life of the payments.

You're smart to have hung on to that 7.3. You missed the question though, he said "NEW" truck. The Ford 6.0 and 6.4 power strokes are not even close to the reliability of the 7.3. My old boss has had 2 of each 6.0 & 6.4 and he hates them both. What really got him, was that they designed a truck, that the cab has to be pulled off to do any kind of service work to the engine. In his mind, as well as others, it was just to be able to charge more money for service.

Toyota's working on a 1 ton right now. The proto-type that I saw pics of, showed a 4x4, crew cab, dually, with a diesel engine. As with everything else they design and build, it won't be released until it has proven it's self.
