I have had bagworms the last 3-4 years in my evergreens and struggling to keep them under control. When, and with what do I spray with to keep the under control. I have used malathion with limited success spraying in mid to late june and throughout the summer. Is there a dormant spray that should go on now?

I would think Sevin (carbal I think) would work.
If I got really mad at them, and the evergreens were not right up against the house, I may nuke them with Lorsban, but it's probably not labeled for that.

Do you have a University extension office in your county? They would be good to ask.

Good luck, Gene

Now is the time for dormant spray, but be sure to follow directions exactly. don't spray when temperature is under 45 deg and never spray when windy. however, dormant spray is not effective for bag or web worms. liquid sevin or malathion or liquid thruicide(organic) will get them when they appear. old timey cure for them was to burn them out with a flaming rag on a long pole, but be careful. hope this helps you.

I use bifenthrin and mechanical picking. There is a bacterial (Bt) I might try this year depending on how infested we are this year.

Good Luck,

Kirk

i had a 10ft arbor vitae destroyed by them a couple years ago. i used a shop vac with 10ft of wand to pull them off a small building next to the arbor vitae. then i had to hand pick the bags from about 100 evergreen trees once a week for the rest of the mowing season. i must have gotten them all because i haven't seen any more of them. the worms climbs as high as they can and cast a web to travel on. the local extension office recomended spraying sevin but i have animals so i didn't want to go that route.

I used a spray can of citrus degreaser, sparingly,it killed them on contact with no harm to my walnut tree.

Malathion is what I used where I last lived and had evergreens with bagworms. The only way I could eliminate them was to break open the webs and spray inside the web, but only late in the evening when the worms were coming out of the bags they stay in. It would kill them almost instantly, but if you didn't get all of them wet the ones you missed would continue to destroy the trees. I would spray two or three times in one week always late in the evening when they were active and they were gone for the year. Unfortunatly they always seemed to show back up again the following spring.
After about 10 years I just cut all the evergreens down, dug up the stumps and burnt it all and then planted something else.
That Malathion is some nasty stuff, try not to spray in the wind and at least wear some protection for your health.

Most of the folks around here are GLAD to see the bagworms. While they are non-selective, and kill windbreak trees, they also kill the "weed" Red Cedars that are infesting everyone's pastures....

Done the burning rag on a pole and it seemed to do the trick. Appeared to make the worms suffer which was also rewarding.
