well we had a lot of snow this year but it all went away the last week or so,now I'm getting the the neighbors cats ahead of time usually they don't come around until mid march or so ,and so far they seem to be pretty healthy looking, not like some years they've been kinda nasty looking I think I'm getting some of my own cats back from over the years.

about a week ago i saw a cat giving another one a ride. it's a little early for that, isn't it? i was told by a vet the length of the days is the signal for the extracurricular activities to start.

this farm has distemper in the soil, so we can't keep cats alive. when our daughter was still home she corraled the cats we did have and had the vet give them shots. a couple of years later we had 32 healthy robust cats running around here. when she left home i wasn't about to catch all those cats so they eventually faded away. wish we had a few. jim

been gone for over two months and he came back yesterday. I thought he was coyote or bobcat food for sure. I don't remember him ever tomcat'n that long without stopping by every few days. He must be in great demand although I haven't seen that many feral cats this winter.

Our current neighborhood cat is an all black one, we've been putting some cheap cat food out for him/her lately.
Ain't right for God's creatures to be going hungry in the land of plenty.

My dad hated cats. We kids and mom loved them. We had an old tom cat and we gave it to the neighbors across the road. Before noon it was back home so we gave it to a neighbor who lived about 5 miles away and in two weeks later it was back. so my dad gave it to his sister who lived in the next county about 40 miles away while they were visiting at Easter. Before Labor Day the cat was back. Dad said that was enough so he put it in a sack and took it to the woods. on the way he picked up his axe and we kids were curious so we sneaked along down the path. He held the cat by his rear legs and placed the head acros a stump. As he dropped the blade of the axe areoss its neck the head fell to the base of the stump and then he threw the headless body down the hillside and picked up the empty sack and his axe and went back to the house. Next morning we saw the cat walking up the path meowing and carrying its head in its nouth.

Figure a couple more weeks before the tom's start tommin'. At least here. Years ago when my wife spent her first spring in the country, (town girl), One morning about 3 o'clock she woke me up, there was an awful rukus going on out in the driveway. The cats are fighting out in the driveway! I layed there and listened a moment then told her "they're not fighting" and I rolled over. She had to get the flashlight and go see. Some lessons are taught, others are learned.

I always keep a couple of cats. If you neuter and spay and feed them regularly they will stay home. They will still catch mice no matter how much you feed them. The greatest benefit, they keep the rattlesnakes away. No mice automatically helps keep the snakes away but, the snakes don't like cats either.

Dannie,

The cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back and it would not stay away.

Oh! kitty, Oh! so pretty,
But what a pity,
That the cat came back.

Yeah, they've been busy here already too.

For years all of our cats had distemper and all the farms around did too. It seemed like all the cats were always in a state of dying. It reached a point where people were actually asking around for kittens. We went without cats for a couple of years, now they're back and distemper free.

Yep, My Tom started "prowling his route" a couple weeks ago. Comeback for a snack and a nap next to the stove. Few hours later he is howling wanting back out and will be gone for 16 hours or so. The other night I fell asleep on the couch and didn't get wood put in the stove for the night so it went out about 2am or so and got a bit chilly in the house. The 80lb yellow lab climbed up with me and so did the cat. I was so out of it I didn't relize they were up there till morning when I got up. No blanket, but I stayed toasty warm! They earned their keep that night. That cat and dog are good pals and get along great.

We usually have about 6 or 8 at any one time. If you feed them as much as they want to eat, you'll have mice out in the country. I cut the feed I was putting out by 1/4th and haven't seen any mice since. Every once in a while they'll catch a mole. No rabbits or squirrells anywhere. I've even seen them snatch a bird off the porch rail. I've seen cats climb up into the rafters in pole buildings and grab birds out of their nests.

I think I read somewhere that house cats are the number one killer of song birds in North America. bill m.

The ONLY benefit I have ever seen with having cats,Besides Rats, You Won't have any Trouble with SNAKES, They will head for the Hills, Or somewhere else!
