methanol for weight mix rate

Hello,

I got a 55 gal drum of methanol for tire ballast from my local co-op. I don't remember what the mix rate is and their out of business now. I think I was told 1 gal methanol for 6 gal of water but don't remember for sure. the temp rarely gets below 0 around here.

any one know the anwser to this?

IIRC, a 20% methanol mix won't freeze down to about 0º F.

Since it's lighter than water, and FLAMMABLE, I wouldn't think you'd want to mix it any stronger than needed to keep it from freezing in your specific climate.

Here's a chart I just found on the 'net. I can't vouch for it's accuracy.

Methanol (METHYL ALCOHOL)
Vol.% ---Freezing Point,F ---Flash Point,F

0----------32f--------No Flash
13---------20f --------130f
24---------0f ---------110f
35---------15f---------95f
46 --------40f---------85f
56---------65f---------75f
66---------95f---------70f
75---------115f--------60f
83---------125f--------55f
92---------130f--------55f
100--------144f--------55f

Are you sure it's pure methanol? That's what they burn in sprint cars but you have to buy it at the track because you're not allowed to have more than 5 gallons of it away from the track. When it burns, you dont see a flame and it requires special training in case of a fire. I don't think I'd want it in my tires. Dave
