My old 54 chevy truck is used to haul my tractor and disc. Dad didn't wear it out, so I am going to give it a try. It is a 6400 series. It is a 1 1/2 - 2 ton flat bed. The bendix brake assist(hydrovac) mounts under the bed and is operated by manifold vacuum. It is seperate from the master cylinder. I need a repair kit for this unit. Any body know where old chevy truck parts can be purchased? Another problem is a large spring inside that is broken. That may be a problem finding? Thanks stan

I don't know. I have a 1955, 6500 series with the same setup. If you get it fixed though put a tablespoon of 10 weight oil in it every year. That is according to my manual. Click on the Classic Truck forum on this page. Someone there may know. While you are there check the photos. There is a picture of a 1946 2 ton from Norway , real nice truck.

Hi, last week I purchased a '49 3/4 ton Chevrolet. A good resource I found for parts for these trucks is lmctruck. They have lots of parts (at least for my model), and it looks like others too! I hope this helps.

It used to be easy to find rebuild kits, but I haven't been able to find one for over 10 years. Different suppliers say they were dropped for liability reasons.

Is it still the old unit with the leather piston seals, or has it been replaced by a more modern diaphragm unit?

If there is a knowledgeable brake parts supplier near you, they should be to fix you up with a newer-style diaphragm unit.

We had one not too far away that was SUPER at such things 'til the younger generation took over, now they haven't got a clue about the older stuff.

Another alternative would be to find a REAL autoparts store that has a Raybestos Brake Part Catalog for Older Trucks.

If you can find a part #, someone probably still has one available.

Also, rebuilders such as Cardone have a "Repair and Return" service available even for some of the older stuff.

You might try contacting them through their website to see if they can help and to find a dealer near you.

Don't know about a 54 but I have been able to get any brake parts I need from my local NAPA store even a booster for my early 70's GM grain trucks. NAPA has to order in the rebuilt boosters from down south tho so it can take a few days. Another place is CATCO heavy truck parts. They stock most hydraulic brake parts for GM trucks. Good quality and better prices than NAPA, less china parts than NAPA to.

I've heard the same story about the kits are no longer available for liability issues. You should at the least be able to send yours off and have it rebuilt. At the right parts store they should be able to order you one and return your old one as a core.
