Timing H tractor.

Hi Guys.
Farmall H Tractor, Can you tell me where I am going wrong, if I take out number one spark plug, and turn the engine over until I feel a puff of air, the two marks on the bottom pulley are about three inches from the pointer, if I then turn the engine on until the first mark lines up with the pointer on the front cover, the rotor is pointing at number one, is this right? because when I try to start it, the engine splutters but don't pick up, I do have spark at the plugs. Any help would be truly appreciated.

Mag or distributor?

If it's a mag, the impulse should snap just as the first mark lines up with the stationary pointer.

If it's a distributor, ground the coil high-tension lead for safety. Connect a non-powered test light to the primary terminal on the distributor. Turn on the ignition switch.

SLOWLY turn the crankshaft to bring the first mark into alignment. Just as the marks align, the test light should LIGHT, indicating the points have just begun to open. This is when a distributor makes a spark.

The #1 cylinder is the one closest to the radiator. Pull the plug like you say then wait for the puff of air to quit that is when the piston is at TDC (top dead center) this is when it should fire. Make sure the puff of air you feel is the air from compression and not from the exhaust stroke. The compression puff of air will be stronger since both valves should be closed at this time.

Are you running a mag or distributor on your tractor.

The double marks are there to indicate that the first mark is the TDC mark for ignition timing. The reason for this is that there is a THIRD mark that when aligned with the pointer allows you to grease the pilot bearing.

Thank you for the replies, I did not know what the third mark was for thank you, I do have a distributor, it is almost like I feel the air one quarter turn before the top, but then when I turn that quarter turn to the mark (TDC) the piston is at the top and the rotor is pointing at number ONE, could the distribtor drive gear be one tooth off on the cam ? Thanks for the help Guys.

Hi Guys,
I have number one at ( TDC ) I put a test light on the distributor and it lights at (TDC ) both valves are closed on number one, I have a valve slightly open on two,and another on three, and four has just closed.this engine splutters but will not pick up the revs. At first I thought it was the carburetor, so I took the carburetor off a running Farmall H, but it is doing the same thing. thank you.
