I guess I'm going to have to have a fatty tumor removed in my stomach and was wondering if any of you folks have ever undergone this type of operation ? If so, I am intersted in details as i would like to get on my tractor as soon as I can... don't know anything about it and it is the first time I have ever had surgery; 67 years now and I can't begin to tell how concerned I am about it ! Would appreciate any info you kind folks may be able to supply me with,,, thanks JIM

Get someone else to drive your tractor........ I had a busted appendix and was a week and a half in the hospital. Being the tuff guy I am, I jumped on the tractor the day after I came home, loaded up some t posts and drove 40 or so for a fence. Was screwed up for the next 8 weeks or so. Wife had her appendix out and then her gall bladder all within 8 weeks and was fine because she took it easy afterwards. Just don't push yourself. And ASK THE DOCTOR!!!!!!

Good Luck,

Dave

I'm 66 years old, and I've had open heart surgery (after having a heart attack, lens replacement surgery is both eyes, spinal surgery (that really hurt). I'd be willing to trade my spinal surgery for your upcoming stomach surgery any day. Look at it as an opportunity to lose weight, assumeing you need to lose weight, which you probably will. The down side is you wont't be doing any sit-ups for awhile and you'll also be eating baby food for awhile (yuk!).

I had my gall bladder out in 1997, I was young then. I would have died if I would have waited another 2 months.

Best advice, follow doctors order, eat right, take it easy after surgery.

like dave2, had the ruptured appendix taken out, laid in the hosp a week and climbed right on the tractor when i got home. bad idea! i was 24 then but at 67 you're smarter than that....right? if you're anxious to get back on the tractor, it tells me you're an active guy and that helps more than you realize.

i really do hope this turns out ok for you. you have good reason to be concerned and i am concerned too. let us know how it turned out.god bless. jim

I had a duodenal ulcer operated on once. The surgeon also found an acute appendix. As I recall, I was in the hospital a week, convalesced at home for a couple of weeks, and went back to work part time for a couple more weeks.

The surgeon told me at the time if I felt comfortable doing something, do it in moderation. If I didn't feel comfortable, don't do it.

In 2001 I had stomach surgery. I had my stomach stapled to lose weight. It is called bariatric surgery and it was done thru 6 small incisions on my belly. I was in the hospital for 3 days and could have went back to work in 2 weeks but I had the sick leave and took 6 weeks. I had very little pain and the only problem I had with the surgery was I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia. It was also my first surgery and I was nervous until they gave me the "don"t care" shot. After that, it just didn"t matter! I was very blessed in that the surgery allowed me to lose almost 160 pounds and has made a tremendous impact on my health. Good luck with your surgery and do listen to your doctor about what to do and how long to wait before resuming tractor driving.

Are they doing laprascopic surgery or a traditional incision? Makes a big difference. Had my gall bladder ripped out a few years ago through a laprascope. Overnight in the hospital, up walking around the next day. Dr. gave me a prescription for Vicodin for pain, think I used it once or twice after I got home. Getting the IV in the back of my hand was the most painful part of the whole thing. I felt like going back to work after a couple days, but the Dr. made me stay home for a week.

If they're doing a traditional incisions, then the recovery time will be a lot longer.

Good luck,

Keith

If they are doing a traditional incision (not laparoscopy) you won't be driving a tractor for a couple of months at least. I had my gall bladder out that way, cut me from the belly button stright north about 4 inches. It took me about 3 months before I could start doing stuff. I got tired really easily too while that was healing.

My wife's nephew should've had that surgery. He's over 400 pounds and has all kind of health issues. He's only 63 and he's been told that if they can't fix his leg circulation problem he may die. He has no health insurance. I always told my wife that his mother would probably out live him and she's 91 and will br 92 later this year. Hal

Don't worry about your tractors. They will wait for you. I've seen too many people reverse a good operation by not taking it easy afterwards. It takes a lot longer to get better if you never allow the proper healing period. I have also seen people use an operation to get out of doing things for way too long because other people around them feel sorry and do everything for them. Listen to the Doctors, they are usually right. Dave

Had prostate surgery 9 month ago. I think they got all of my cancer. PSA <.01 three times in a row(every 3 months.)I have a Hernia now. I think it was caused from all of those holes that they punched in me.

I had ventril hernia, same area -- stayed bowed over when I walked for a week or two but I don't think I could have laid up as long as the Doctor said too. Main thing is don't worry about it too much, the Doctor has probably done this or similar operation many, many times, these days your in and out of the Hospital before you know it.

Not stomach surgery, but I've had 2 intestinal surgeries for crones disease and I would guess that the operations and recovery are similar. The only real issue that I had was that I had a 10" incision down my belly that took awhile to heal, and even longer to rebuild the muscles. The best advice I can give you is to NOT watch anything really funny on the tv. Laughing with the staples/stitches is about as painful as about anything you can imagine. Dave

Mother-In-Law had a section removed and seemed to take it in stride. The problem comes when a person has been on blood thinners and has to go off them for the surgery and then back on about a week after surgery. Going back on the blood thinner meds tends to cause strokes in about a weeks time. Sure enough she had a stroke about a week later and suffers from the stroke not the stomach surgery.

I had 3/4 of my stomach taken 9/11/62, I have lived the last 46 years on 1/4 stomach. The Doctor's said ulcers caused by worry about too many women, thinking back I would have forgot the women and kept the stomach.

Never been there my self but a good buddy of mine was there about this time last year. He had a wad of scar tissue from an ulser build up in the bottom of his stomach and would not let stuff out the bottom. He lost about 50 lbs in about 3 months. Had the surgery, got back up to fight'n weight in about 6 months and did great with it.

Good luck, home you come out as well as he did.

One year ago I had my first operation because of diverticulosis. They removed 8 inches of my colon and I was very very worried till the point the gave me some don"t give a hoot in my IV. The next thing I knew I was back in my room looking at the nurses and hungry. I spent a few days in the hospital and then home. I wasn"t alowed to do much but felt fine and total time off was 8 weeks. I know now I worried way too much and as far as pain mostly discomfort because I was hungry. Staples stung a little when they removed the ones by my belly button. Good luck and don"t worry, just go in with a positive attitude.

My dad had stomach surgery 5 years ago. It was rough, but he made it through ok and he was 79 at the time and was 4 weeks post op for open heart. He said he'd take open heart 10 times before he'd have another stomach operation. But if you need it, you need it.

We'll be praying for you.
