OT: Cost of Coal--what are you paying?

Just wondering? What does coal cost in your area? I know what firewood and wood pellets cost in my area. But what does coal cost, either nuggets or pellets? I would not even know where to buy it.

I have been looking for coal in Eastern South Dakota. I want it for heating the house (warm morning) and I want to try some blacksmithing. I have not been able to find any. Any hints on where to look would be great. I found some in Missouri but that is at least 5 hours away.

$283/ton. Anthracite, nut size in 40 lb bags. Bulk coal, still in the lump, is $300/ton, explain that one to me? South central Kentucky.

Judging from the wording of your question, it is clear to me that you have little experience with burning coal. "Nuggets" and "pellets" are not in the coal lexicon.

The best forum for coal burning is accessed at the link below. There is one thread devoted to recent prices paid by users. Freight and dealer markup can double the cost of coal compared to driving to the "breaker" and placing your truck under their conveyor.

Anthracite (best and more expensive) requires equipment designed for that type. Bituminous (lotsa smoke and less heat) can be burned in a wood stove in a pinch.

Free coal is available in some parts of the country by placing want ads at Craigslist. I have shoveled over 18 tons of Anthracite from seven cellars. I am located outside of Boston. Nearly all the coal was at least 50 years old.

It is unlikely you will find any anthracite for sale outside of a 500 mile radius of Northeast PA.
Bituminous is available in many states.
Coal forum.

BIL's mother paid $170 a ton in central NY last fall for bagged pea coal out of northern PA.

John The local Iron Store sells bags of hard coal for blacksmithing. I think they are UPS shippable or used to be. Our UPS guy is a blacksmith, I'll try and find out where he gets his.

Lignite stoker coal in western North Dakota is about 25.00/ton at the mine. it is about 6-7000 BTU per pound. Wyoming hard coal delivered to ND is about 90.00/ton. It is about 10-12000 BTU per pound. I burn about 40 ton of lignite per year and heat approximately 8000 square feet to 65-70 degrees. It is cheap heat compared to electricity, natural gas, or propane.

I use it as a main heat source....nat gas furnace as a backup....
I am in the coal region....
I pay $75 per ton for bit. nut coal.....was $50 per ton last year...
Antracite is over $200 ton.....not a regional item here in western PA ..
I run a Hitzer 85 in the basement and a 55 in the attached garage and burn around 6 to 8 ton per heating season.....usually start about mid Oct. ...quit in April.....

I do some blacksmithing on the side.....use what I burn in the stove...

Saves a lot on heating bills.....about 2 to 3 hundred per month in the winter months .....

KYRED, Would you share the name/number of your supplier in Owensboro? Email is open if you'd rather do that. Thanks

My wife and I spoke to a couple of guys who had a blacksmith exhibit at the Oakland County Fair. I recall that they said they had to go to over to somewhere near Chicago or Gary to get their coal. They bought it by the ton.

I can't imagine that it makes sense to heat with coal, given the aggravation involved. But if you're just thinking about doing some hobby blacksmithing, then your best bet would be to find another smith who is willing to sell you some of his coal.

The reason I am asking about the coal pricing is cause that Propane price is a real killer.

And I thought I would ask all the guys here what Coal costs cause all parts of the country are represented here.

Even with my wood pellet stove I am going to use 600 gallons of so of propane which is about $1,500. OUCH!!! And that is for when I am at work.

The pellet stove will save me about $800-1000 this year in propane (reduced by 1/2) but to ask about coal and see what the cost is cant hurt.
If I would get a coal stove, I dont really plan on it now but if propane gets above $3/gallon then I need to add another heat source.

As of Friday, Rice coal at the scale was $150.00 a ton. Antracite.
Last summer I paid $170.00 ton delivered. Wilkes-Barre area of PA.

Coal produces about eight times more ash than wood. Coal ashes poison the soil whereas wood ashes fertilize the soil. Coal smoke smells terrible whereas wood smoke---not so bad.

Do you pick up the coal with your Farmall? That wagon looks like it is ready to collapse.
How many tons is that in the wagon.?

When you find coal, lay in a good supply before your messiah closes/taxes it out of business as he has promised.

gun guru, I have 5 ton on the wagon, I forgot to air up the tires before the coal man dumped the coal on it. I buy my coal in the summer because it is cheaper. My coal bin was full, that is why I loaded the wagon. I have my coal stoker in my detached garage/shop, that way I don't have coal/ash dust in the house and the residual heat from the stoker heats the garage/shop. I have a oil burner in the cellar of the house and run my hot water from the stoker through it. The circulator pumps on the oil burner circulate the hot water through the base board radiation. If the coal stoker should crap out I can flip a switch and close a couple of valves and the oil burner would take over.

I may have suggested this before, but you should see if you can get your neighbors to all agree to tie into natural gas service. I'm fortunate enough that we had gas at the road and I just had to pay for about 600 feet of line to the house. I saved enough to pay for my connection fee within a couple of years.

I called the Cons. ener. back in the summer to see If I could get this set up and the guy told me the costs associated, And it would be about $10,000 for me to get it. That is with running the line down the road and me running a line from my house to the road.

Aint worth it. Besides the Dumba$$ at consumers never called me back and I tried to get a hold of him 3 times. I left messages to. They dont care. (neither do I)
